DDs kindergarten teacher allows it in class (shocking !). I confirmed this at parent- teacher conference. Something about helping learning. DD was all into it as a kid trading thing - she's mostly over it now.

Growing up I was taught chewing gum was rude, especially in the house. I was allowed to chew bubble gum outside occasionally though. Now I just think it's gross after about five minutes. DS will be allowed to chew it outside whenever he gets old enough to be able to chew but not swallow.
I think maybe it depends on the kid...I remember chewing some Doublemint at like 3, then putting it in my own hair. That was probably too young, or something, LOL.
I never gave it much thought. Anna is six and has tried it but hates it. Sophia discovered it recently (not quite 4) and is obsessed so I share with her.
I prefer that they not chew gum at all, but I don't think I would prevent them from doing it from I guess 7 on. Old enough so it's not really a choking hazard.
Anyway, I think that's when I started chewing gum (broke the habit forever when I got braces).
My SDs went through a phase when they were 5/6 where they would stick it to furniture when they were done with it. I outlawed gum. MIL said I was being a mean stepmother when we visited and let them have some out of the gumball machine. I enjoyed watching her scrape it off her dining room table that afternoon.
DS is a handful and I think he would be more destructive with gum.
