I've only read page 1. Taking butter would be a disaster. You know what's less convenient than taking your own butter? Washing butter off all your clothes.
I've traveled with cheese domestically but not internationally. They always swab it to make sure it's not explosive (we think it must look like plastic explosives on the x-ray machine). Whether you'd have to declare it would presumably depend on the laws of the Bahamas regarding the importation of foreign food products.
But really, you can afford to buy butter and cheese. Pack some things like granola bars or crackers that travel better.
I think I might try snapware instead of a ziploc. In fact, I'd put the snapware inside a ziploc.
if i was going to bring butter in my suitcase (which i am not) but if i was going to, this is what i'd do to make sure my clothes don't get ruined. and i'd freeze the butter beforehand. but this seems like the best way to get your bags thrown apart by TSA when that comes up through their scanner. No thanks.
It was a joke in response to the fact that ML would go to town with this MM nonsense, guys.
The OP was a joke? If so, and you just made this up out of the blue to give ML some MM fodder, then I can see that you really, REALLY need this vacation.

My original question was serious. It was throwing in that bit about my portfolio that was intended as a joke to ruffle feathers. If ML is going to come over here to poke fun, I'm going to throw it back at them.
I want to avoid going to an actual store because we won't have a car seat for our kiddo, and I know DH is against taking a public bus just to get food items. So grocery delivery it is.
I just hate the thought of ordering more butter (or anything, really) than I need, when I will only use a few tablespoons when prepping breakfast in the condo. Add in the fact that the prices are basically robbery, and I'm annoyed. That's my case and I'm sticking to it.
But in the end, I probably won't pack butter or cheese, because I don't want TSA to single our luggage out.

When I read what I thought was a confession that the whole thing was a joke I was ^o) and then :^)
Now I'm solidly in the ^o) :^) (huh) ^o) :^) (huh) (huh) (huh) camp.

Well CloudBee the good news is that I am now so relieved that you didn't make up this whole scenario out of boredom that the feeling of relief has somewhat overtaken the "oh honey, no" feeling!
FWIW, the TSA will probably not be an issue with these things. I mean, they open bags all the time anyway, I don't think that cheese would get you especially flagged. I am have a hard time imagining myself ever packing butter on my vacation, but if taking it seems less of a hassle to you than either going to buy some or ordering some, then eh, I can't get too worked up about it.

Why?
Hassle. His issue, not mine. I'm happy to take public transportation and do so in NYC whenever I go in myself for drs appointments. But I respect that he hates it and doesn't like me hopping on it alone when we're out of the country. (Again, there's more to it. Part of this also stems from blacking out in the past while out on my own due to arrhythmias. Being on foreign soil makes him nervous. So don't attack.)
And I'm not taking a taxi to the grocery store for BUTTER.
DH is against taking a public bus just to get food items.
What? Why? Is he also against taking a taxi, or the shuttle that someone else mentioned?
eta: I don't think anyone was recommending taking the taxi for one item. You would get your stuff for the week and avoid paying high grocery delivery prices.

This is my question too. Also, didn't someone mention that there was a shuttle that you could take to the store?

Not entirely true. As I said, cheese gets swabbed to make sure it's not explosive. I can't say for what happens in a checked bag, but in a carry on, that happens every single time. And yes, I have traveled with cheese more than once. My stepdad loves the cheese in WI, so we'd always take some when we went to visit. H just brought home $42 worth of cheese from WI (FUCKING GLORIOUS) and it was all certified non-explosive by the TSA.
I actually know an alarming amount about traveling with dairy.
But only cheese. Never butter. That's a bridge too far.

Sorry, I meant that assuming this is going in a checked bag then yes it'll probably guarantee your bag gets opened, but any search they do will probably not affect CloudBee beyond a regular bag search. I would love for the TSA to leave my bags alone (or just repack them correctly!), but since I assume that my bag will be opened most of the time anyway, not wanting that to happen wouldn't be my reason for not packing something.
lasagnasshole - did he bring back cheese curds? Once summer is behind us I'm going to place another order to have some shipped from WI. True love!
He did. They still had a tiny bit of squeak in them.
He also brought back Carr Valley Bessie's Blend, which is pretty much the best cheese ever, another three-milk blend cheese, Hook's 6-year cheddar, and a fontina. It was the best week ever.

Maybe I'll just pack EVOO.
I won't attack, but L-O-L at him taking a shuttle being more of a hassle than trying to pack dairy products in your luggage. WTF.
Be real, though. Butter may flatted and semi-melt, but in a few Ziplocks it's not going to get all over our clothing. Shampoo is probably more of risk because of the pressure released when a bottle is squeezed - bagged or not.
So yeah, I don't see butter as being this massive risk everyone's making it out to be if properly packaged.
But I do agree that I may arrive to find it completely flattened and melted. Though honestly, it's going to spend more time chilled in cargo than sitting out in the sun on the tarmac.
You guys are really invested in my question! I get that it sounds crazy, but I'm not putting my belongings at risk. Doesn't anyone else ever fly home with jam, sauces from France, or pesto? Give me a break. Butter just SOUNDS extreme because it's not the norm. I GET THAT.

I'm so jealous of the curds. TJ's used to sell it, but stopped after about 6 months. I haven't seen it anywhere locally. Ever. Oh wait - they did carry frozen poutine last winter. That was awesome.

Sure.
But that involves a) bringing something back that I can't get at home, and b) coming home, where it's easier to deal with cleaning up spills and washing clothes if something happens.
It's not because we're going on a nice vacation but are too cheap to spend 10 bucks on butter when we're already splurging on grocery delivery.
Would a can of cooking spray work? Not sure if you need it to butter bread or something.
I wanted to make pancakes, eggs, and have buttered bagels.
And a dish I want to make while we're there requires butter.
We'll eat most of our meals out, but will probably stay in for breakfast. We don't want to rush ourselves while on vacation to get out the door early in the AM with a toddler. Vacation is all about being lazy!

No, butter sounds extreme because it is not packaged in a nice glass jar like jam or sauces or pesto are. Also, because it is not shelf stable.
This post also seems to be solidly in the "I'm going to ask a question but do whatever I want no matter what you guys say" camp.
