Don't take them lightly. I was on a co-ed softball league and our game got cancelled due to the chance of rain. A bunch of the team went to a neighborhood bar. Thank God I went home. The storm came so fast and so strong it blew the building attached to the bar over. Three of the guys got hurt. One, who just got back from his second tour in the Middle East, got buried in the rubble. He is paralyzed from the waist down.
These storms are serious. I was trapped in my house overnight because trees were down on every street and there was no way to drive to my parents house who had electric and AC.

The sky got dark and the storm started shortly after. The wind was so strong it was raining sideways and sounded like a train. It only lasted 5 minutes, but it took down enough trees that we lost power for almost 2 weeks. I have never seen wind like that. It was so strong that it turned over semi trucks on the highway. The damage was like a tornado.
It took down the trees blocking our road (we live near the end of a deadend road and it took 3 days until they cleared it enough for us to drive. This happened at the end of June and they are still cleaning up all of the trees. Several homes were condemned because trees fell and damaged the foundation beyond repair. We had a tree fall on our barn. A home near us had half of their roof taken off.

Well, first of all, I am amazed at your preparedness, IIOY!! That's great. Second, I had never heard of such a thing before this morning when my aunt posted something about the Ohio River Valley being under a warning today but I for real thought she was drunkbooking and accidentally posted a link from a spanish weather site. True story.
"This prick is asking for someone here to bring him to task Somebody give me some dirt on this vacuous mass so we can at last unmask him I'll pull the trigger on it, someone load the gun and cock it While we were all watching, he got Washington in his pocket."

Just got our first massive clap of thunder here on the Blue Ridge and the bright red/orange/yellow blob on the radar is closing in. Guess I should turn off the 'puter.

That is what Memphis looked like during Hurricane Elvis.
I remember that day very well. My ex-h was remarking about how weird the sky looked and how high the wind was, when the wind ripped the door out of his hand. We were the only people on the block that had power after the storm rolled through. We had 306,000 utility customers without power. Our local utility company services about 400-450K customers. The tree damage was unreal.

I spent the whole afternoon thinking IIOY spelled Jericho wrong.
Man y'all get some weather out there. Stay safe everyone!
reeve and pesca - I posted a photo on Facebook last night of the storm rolling in, so that should give you an idea. In a nutshell, it resembles every supernatural horror movie "danger is a-coming!" scene you've ever seen.
We got lucky and got little more than some furious lightning, thunder, and wind, and moderate rain, but derechos can actually be immensely destructive.

Glad you got home okay! I've seen trees on house pictures everywhere and after Irene threw 2 trees on my house I'm a little jittery During our storm a few weeks ago we were in the basement in the dark and just thinking that if another tree fell we were going to walk away and never come back lol. My thoughts go out to those with a lot of damage. We are just getting a functional house again.
