I made the conscious decision not to be scared when we moved to the boonies. At the farmhouse and here at the new house the locations are very private. You can't see us from the road at all. No one would ever come down our gravel driveway. And the farmhouse was a POAS and the new house is very modest. Obviously nothing good to steal. So I decided to stop seeing scary faces in the window, jumping at every noise, because there is really seriously nobody there.

I used to feel this way (H was a fireman before he got injured and would be gone for 48-72 hour shifts). I had an alarm installed (we have property) with motion cameras on the shop area so I can check anything out before opening the door. Also, my dad is a sherif, he taught me self defense and how to shoot. I kinda dare someone to come in ?
Thanks everyone! I'm glad I'm not alone but sad that so many of us struggle with this. We have an alarm system but I usually keep it on "stay" instead of "away" so if the robber broke in through the window it wouldn't go off (lol?). We don't have a dog. You've given me some good things to think about!
My stay button disables motion only, are you sure the windows aren't protected?
It didn't bother me when I lived on the 20-something floor of an apartment building but it does in a house. Now I sleep with all the outdoor lights on but otherwise don't do anything differently. Once I fall asleep, I'm usually okay.
Last time DH went OOT, there was a SNAKE in the garage. That basically drove me to drink until he returned. On the bright side (if you want to call it that), I was too scared about finding reptiles in the house to have any extra energy to worry about intruders. I REALLY hate snakes.
