Hi! So we bought a house! We ended up in Tacoma, though, in either North End or Old Tacoma, I don't remember exactly which neighborhood, the whole weekend is a blur! Loved loved loved West Seattle, but there wasn't much in our budget that fit our (admittedly rigid) needs. In Tacoma, I wass able to get the exact kind of neighborhood I'm looking for, the old tudor I've been lusting over, and a much lower mortgage. We figured that there was no reason to overpay, since we don't actually have to commute to Seattle.
Thank you all so much for the help and advice! Am I still eligible to hang out with you guys over here?
Welcome! I work in Tacoma and live nearby, so I can give you revs on where to eat, etc. I think you're going to get here just in time for a very hot summer!

As long as the inspection goes well, we close on 3/13. I'm not sure when we're actually going to move. We haven't sold our Cincinnati house yet, so it's a matter of which house we'd prefer to leave vacant for a few weeks. I think it will be late March - moving costs will still be lower and there will still be 2 months left of school, so plenty of time to make friends.
My main concern is timing for my Boston marathon trip late April
So we're calling around for insurance (home and car) and one of the agents just legit asked me why in the world I'd want to live in Tacoma.
It seemed like a perfectly pleasant place. WTF?
Tacoma has had a bit of a bad reputation from the past, but as minion said every city has its good and bad areas. In addition Tacoma has come A LONG way. When I started working down there it was a much different city than what I had remembered from almost 20 years ago.

Well, the inspection came back and the house is awful. Not just little things, but BFD structural problems. Severed floor joists, broken support beams, the works. Not sure what our plan is, at this point. Probably send the husband out alone toward the end of March, hoping that the inventory picks up. At least we've narrowed down the hoods we're interested in.
Worst case, our house sells before we find something and we live in the IL's basement for a while. Ick.

Ugh, this sounds terrible, but at least you dodged a bullet.
