I think once girls hit Kindy/1st grade their butts should be covered while wearing leggings. So no leggings with t shirts that hit about the waist/hips.
My DD1 wears leggings and longer tunics that come to about mid thigh.
I was in elementary school from '89-'96, through most of which I wore leggings and oversized T-shirts/sweaters most days of the week, so I think they're fine.
They are the only pants DD1 and DD2 will wear, they hate jeans. DD3 is wearing her toddler skinny jeans today, but she already voiced she didn't like them, lol, "too tight!"
@upnorth I prefer real pants but a) one of my girls refuses jeans and is so-so on other pants and b) they're really really skinny and even skinny jeans are questionable on tem.
This is funny, because I prefer skinny jeans on my DD since leggings are most of the time too loose without a diaper to hold them up. Her 2T leggings fit her waist but are really capris.
That being said, I don't think it's inappropriate for elementary school girls to wear them as pants, with longer shirts. I don't really like them as true pants on anyone above the age of 3/4.

Non-snarky question . . . can I ask what your reasoning is here?

They're not baby girls anymore. My 14 month old DD wears regular length shirts with leggings, I don't want my 6 year old doing it. I actually stopped when she was 4ish. By the time they get to elementary school I think it looks dumb, on top of any sexualization issue one might have, although that is not my line of thinking.
It doesn't seem I'm alone in this thought so not sure why you singled me out.

Sorry, I'm honestly not trying to offend, I was just genuinely curious since you were the first poster that I saw reply with a very specific answer for when you thought they were no longer appropriate (K/1st grade). Just curious why that age and not another.
I think about clothing norms sometimes and why certain types of clothing are considered appropriate/inappropriate. I work in an office that's conservative but casual and has a bunch of strange, unwritten rules. Leggings and tunics would not be okay, but t-shirts with logos are fine, etc. Your response was just interesting to me because I don't think of leggings as being "babyish."

I don't think leggings are babyish. I wear leggings. But sure as hell not with a shirt that doesn't cover my ass. I said Kindy/1st grade because I think elementary aged children are too old for that look. It's somewhat arbitrary but I look at my DD1 and other girls in her class (she's in 1st grade) and even last year would have thought they were too old for it. I'm not sure I can articulate it beyond I just don't like it lol

Just posting in solidarity with the other parents with jean-haters. My 3YO will rarely wear them. She even refuses a chambray button-up that I bought her (and it's SO cute and I am bummed about it). She's also tall and skinny so even when I do get her in jeans that fit in length we have to add a dapper snapper. Leggings are where it's at. I generally out in her longer (but not necessarily fully butt-covering length) tops when I can, but that's with every kind of bottom, because I hate shirts that are so short that her back is exposed when she bends.

This is exactly what I was thinking. My elementary school years went by in a blur of neon leggings, slouch socks and LA Gears.
