So, we were watching the swimming and the lane "overlay graphics" would show the name/country and OR, 2nd, 3rd . I saw on a US website the same overlays with 1st 2nd 3rd.
I thought the OR stood for Gold. H thought the OR stood for Olympic Record.

OR is Olympic Record WR is World Record
If the winner finishes first but not a record, it's labeled as 1st. At least on Australian coverage. I'm not sure about other countries' overage.
On a related note my DH and I are having a bit of an argument about the angle the swimming is shot from. He insists that the usual angle has the swimmers diving in from the right side of the screen and swimming to the left -- opposite the way it is shown for this Olympics. I say I have seen it both ways and neither one looks more correct to me. But the more I think about it, I'm not sure he's not right. Does anyone have an opinion?
OR = Olympic Record, for when the winner sets a new record.
For the coverage and angle, the only time I recall swimmers "diving to the left" is when it was a 50m race... nearly all swimming that I can remember has them starting from the left and going to the right. And thus finishing on the left after the return leg... Always finishes on the left...
