DS1 is 7 - he is getting a skateboard, a bow and arrow set (with suction cups - he did archery at camp this summer and is obsessed), and a bunch of random Minecraft, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle, and Lego sets. I think relatives are getting him a magic set, a domino set, and this break your own geodes thing (He is really into rocks and finding "treasure" lol)
He has been all Legos all the time for the past 3-4 years, he is just now branching out a bit. Last year when he was 6 the big hits (other than Legos) were a robot toy that shoots foam discs, Star Wars stuff, and Simon.
I think we are getting him a driveway basketball hoop but for his birthday - no fun to give that in December when it will be too cold and snowy to use it for a few months
I'm posting here so I can come back to good ideas for my 5 yo. He'll probably get some lego and Minecraft stuff and a captain America helmet. I also had great success with giving the kids coupons for their birthdays so we'll do that again for Christmas. Coupons were for 1/2 hr screen time, ice cream cone at local gelateria, etc.
I'm considering a Kindle Fire. I already ordered one for his 8 year old sister. I will set it up and see how I feel about it for a 6 year old. Things he has asked for are Legos and a lacrosse goal.

Dss has a kindle fire at his mom's, and he really enjoys it. I know he mostly plays games on it.
We are getting him a Power Train City electric train set(s) and accessories.
ETA: This is the main gift DH and I have talked about. I am sure we will also be getting a lego set or two, books, and John Deere/Tonka/CAT trucks/tractors.
