I think you could pull off Debra Messing's color or Joanna Garcia Swisher's color when she was on that tv show last year... but not a Kirsten Dunst as Mary Jane in Spider Man red.
Do you have a really good colorist? I think the deeper red would be good, but red is a color I wouldn't DIY. I'd let the colorist custom blend something they think will look best.

Oh, I was going to my stylist. I don't dye my hair from a box ever. I have red undertones that come out no matter what color I try to dye it.
Yes, but prepare for it to wash out FAST. I had a beautiful deep red on my medium brown hair and even with only washing it 2-3 times a week and once a week using the $$$$ Bumble and bumble red shampoo (which made my hair feel like it was still filthy), the color was all gone in 3-4 weeks.
So my hairdresser told me to try highlights before full color to see what I thought. She did foils on the top layers. In some light you can't see anything and in some lights the top of my head just has odd looking chunks of red. Not sure if I should go back and just dye my whole head or let it grow out.
I hate it when hairdressers don't want to do what you ask. It took me three tries to get the cut I wanted when I went short. I know what I want. If I hate it its my fault and its just hair!

I just went from highlighted blonde to a reddish brown and did it myself. I made an appointment to get it done at the salon, but then saw I could buy professional hair color at Sally's for $6, and they even carry the same exact brand as my salon. It seemed dumb for me to pay $70 or whatever when I could do it myself for $6.
There is a newbie over on the S&B board who is a hairdresser, and she was soooo helpful in picking my color. Her name is Jolita and I bet she would help you pick the perfect red.
This is my new color and it's exactly what I was looking for.
