I was a teacher for 13 years and then the year I got pregnant I became a Vice Principal (or rather, I got pregnant the summer right before I started at VP). Now, in my 2nd year as VP I am pregnant again. DH is in his 6th year of teaching (he is on paternity leave right now).
DH has no plans to move up within the educational hierarchy, so he's fine. For me it is a bit more complicated. When I decide to go for Principal it is going to be a lot more work. If I didn't have kids or they were older I might have only been a VP for 3-4 years. I am thinking it will be at least 5-6 now. It's fine, although the pay increase would be nice.

H and I both work at the HQ of the same retailer, although we do different things. Each of us has busy times, where we pick up the slack for the other.
I could be pursuing a promotion with supervisory responsibility in the area I'm in now, but I don't want to. I don't really like managing others, and I like knowing that I am responsible for my own work and my own time. My job is always challenging, and I have a huge, high-profile category, so I am happy where I'm at.
Also, we have a 10 min commute, and we can start any time from 7-9a and leave between 4-6p, so that helps. I am happy for now.
Both of our careers have followed a 'normal trajectory'. Regular but small promotions. I did work PT for a while which did limit me but I was still at a good level and did interesting work. I quit to stay home but my career path didn't really skip a beat when I returned. At any rate, neither if us work much regular overtime so what job we are in at any given time doesn't really impact our personal lives. We are both middle managers and neither one of us would accept a job with a lot of overtime or travel. Luckily in our industry that hasn't seemed to limit us.
