- About Amoosed: The short answer is that she wasn't banned because no one asked. No one reported anything. The only person who said anything to me at all about it was Amoosed, who sent me a message asking me to help her delete something that she accidentally posted. (She had already deleted her post, but it was quoted.) Pagas asked me to delete all of her posts, but didn't say why. It wasn't until later (weeks? months? I don't remember how long it was) that someone asked why she was still around & threw up a thread voting on whether or not to ban her that I found out what had happened. Even then, thoughts were mixed about whether or not she did it on purpose. Amoosed deactivated her account that day.
- There is no such thing as perma-banning. We've never successfully banned anyone permanently. We can ban your account, but we can't stop you from creating another one.
Just poking my nose in here to say I'm glad you posted this info. I had no idea there wasn't a perma-ban feature. Forums I've belonged to in the past had it, and I incorrectly assumed that PB had one as well.
Regarding Amoosed, I think it's sort of a bullshit answer that she wasn't banned because no one asked. It was a clear violation, and I think the mods just let us do a witch hunt because they are reluctant to step in on ML. And to be fair, ML does give the mods a tough time sometimes regarding the deletion of threads, etc. so I can see why they would take time to discuss it. But then nothing happened. Of course now I see that bans around here are pointless because they can just create another account.
Also, when you have multiple threads asking why she wasn't banned... Don't you think that's the time when you explain this stuff?
I'm just sayin'. And if I missed where this was explained on ML, my apologies to you. But it was a violation, and I think the mods/admin handled it very poorly.
I explained all of this on ML as soon as it was brought to my attention. I also said I would go along with whatever the board mods decided to do wrt banning since I wasn't around when it happened and didn't know what went down. I think that was still being discussed when she deactivated her account, which kind of made it all a moot point anyway.
If you guys (as a board) want her permanently banned, you need to decide that and then report any accounts that she creates so that we can ban them. That is how we handle the spammer, who is the only other person in recent history I can remember coming back after being banned.
You can't accuse someone of groupthinking when the majority of the board is opposed to her opinion! C'mon now! This is straight up silliness!
Groupthink has jumped the shark. Rip groupthink.
shows you don't understand the full concept and tenets of groupthink.
This isn't a brainstorming session inside an office. We aren't all trying to come to a consensus on some new beta spreadsheet for the accounting department. This is a discussion board and we will not nor should we agree all the time on all the things. I don't feel like I need to be well versed in the finer points of some academic's thoughts on "groupthink" (especially as they seem to pertain to office environments) in order to conclude that you accusing asdfjkl of engaging in "groupthink" is incredibly misplaced in this context.
I actually think the board as a whole engages in group think on occasion. But I now see where this is going to go with every discussion (e.g. "you are groupthinking me!") as you just did to asdfjkl that I'm just turned off by the whole concept at the moment.
It is not her action of expressing a minority opinion that is groupthink behavior. It is her ad hominem attack on someone for doing something she doesn't like. That is one of the key symptoms of groupthink behavior listed by Irving Janis, the de facto father of groupthink theory. As is stereotyping of outsiders (which CEP tends to do of Republicans, many conservatives), self-censorship (which many lurkers and even regular posters have admitted), and self-appointed mind-guards. See earlier SBP post in this thread.
Also, wanting to oust a moderator who is critical of the group as a whole (see antecedent - lack of leader impartiality).
It's not a board of 100% groupthink. But the behaviors that are groupthink symptoms are present and easy to see.

that's fine. SBP PMd me and I explained it to her there.
I don't have the energy or even desire to go any further with it. Except to say I wasn't quoting "some" academic on the topic. that is like discussing anal retentiveness, referencing Freud, and then someone saying Freud was just some guy that talked about psychosexual development.

Thank you for your reply. I'm going to do as you suggested in the future and tag you if anything needs your attention. I'm glad you cleared things up. I'm still surprised that there is no IP ban, but from your information about users leaving and not returning, I can see how the feature might be unnecessary.
We do have IP bans. They're just easy to get around since IPs can be changed so easily, especially if you post from a cell phone where you get a new IP every time you get a new connection.

michelle are you studying the board? Are we a social experiment? ::raises eyebrow::
Every observation of human interaction is at minimum an anthropological study for an overanalyzing introverted intj/infj psych major philosophy minor (and almost religion minor) lover of learning like myself. I do not have remotely enough influence or control on this board to make it an experiment but if it was one it would be something I would read!
It's pretty cool. They have ham flights and sherry flights. If you ever wanna go...
I don't actually go up that way that often, but I could be roused for decent company.
I'm pretty sure I don't like sherry. Isn't there some new place called Pig or something on 14th street where you can get good sausages? Am I making that up.
This sounds vaguely familiar, but it have not been there. Perhaps we should investigate and explore.
ajj - I love Wonder Woman too. I could never get enough of the re-runs as a child. Also did you know Lynda Carter is apparently a fabulous singer as well? She had (has?) a cabaret show in LA for a while.

Here's another favorite gif of mine:
Love it, so I'm quoting it! I have the boxed DVD set of the show. I was obsessed as a kid and still love her.
