I just found the puppy chewing on the kitchen cabinets. I know I can fix it with a bit of sandpaper and stain, but I hate matching stains, it never looks "right" to me.
My husband said that his mom used to put hot sauce on things to deter the dogs from biting certain items, without harming them, but I'm wondering if that would cause weird staining on the wood. Anyone tried something similar?

I have no idea about it staining the wood, but perhaps you could do a spot test in an inconspicuous place before hand. I will say the hot sauce thing works. When my dog was a puppy, she has a thing for the remote control. In one week, she went through 3 of them, at $20 for each time we had to replace it (and yes, it was my fault for forgetting and leaving it where she could get it). My H put a tiny bit of hot sauce on it, and after that, she never touched it (or really anything else she wasn't supposed to) ever again.

Glad to hear it works. Heck, I might rub some on my toes too, since he thinks they're a fun game as well

Sorry, I'm not much help as far as the puppy chewing but didn't you say you were going to an obedience class? Just wondering how it went and what kind of stuff did you learn?

We had the first class last Saturday. They had us teach him "look at me" and "sit" as well as "handling" i.e. holding him when he doesn't want to be held, so he doesn't freak out at groomers or vet. I asked about biting and they told me a time out is a good option, and it seems to be working on my arms and legs. Furniture, baskets, etc. - not so much.

Make sure to seal the area that he chewed before putting sauce on it. After you re-stain/seal, I would use pledge to make sure that any pores are sealed and then put the sauce on it. Buy lots and lots of bones to deter from chewing wood. you can even buy small wood blocks, if that's what he "prefers".
