Doctor just called with the glucose results. They were abnormal. Ugh. I guess the rest of the pregnancy has been fairly easy that something had to go wrong right? Any advice from anyone else that's been diagnosed?
No advice, but I am nearly certain I'll be joining you in this club next weekend. Maybe find some delicious recipes to try so things don't get boring. Do you have to test your levels regularly or just watch what you eat?

I hope you don't krystee! I'm not sure yet, they are setting me up with an endocrinologist (I think that's what they said) so I will hopefully meet with them this week. Hope I don't have to do shots or testing

I did some quick Googling earlier and read that I need to cut back on milk. Really?! I've been drinking more milk lately because I'm sick of water and I was trying not to drink so much apple juice. Looks like I'm stuck with plain, boring water from now on

Well on the plus side you probably won't gain much weight. My friend had GD and had to basically follow a low carb diet (bc carbs turn into sugars) so she only gained like 20 lbs and lost it right away. Idk. Silver lining?
Sorry though. I'm dreading my sugar test next month.

Is the milk thing because of the sugar in it? Honestly, I might still drink it in moderation--especially more full fat milk--it's definitely a less sugary choice than apple juice.
You can also do flavored carbonated water like La Croix.
Yeah, it's because of the lactose. I think it's still ok in moderation assuming my numbers aren't super bad or anything. I probably will keep drinking small amounts of it but I might also see if I can switch to something else. I do love the La Croix waters, especially the cherry lime one (I was surprised at how good it was!), so I think I will stock up on more of those!
spankswife that is a good point, haha. I did think about that. Eating healthier and exercising more will only be a good thing. I will just miss chocolate

Milk has more carbs than you'd think. I was surprised (my friend had had GD with all three of her girls informed me of this- I was watching my carbs prior to my test because I heard you can get a false positive and didn't want to do the 3 hour if I didn't have to).
Have you ever tried Almond milk? It's very low on carbs (at least the unsweetened is- not sure about the vanilla or chocolate).

Boo. I'm sorry to hear that. There are lots of good recipes out there nowadays though. And I love almond milk. I got hooked on it when I was dieting prior to the IVF.

christy082 I have, I do like almond milk! I think H would be happy switching to almond milk, I know he likes it a lot! I will have to check with the doctor and see if the sweetened kind is ok or not!
Can you throw some fresh squeezed lemon or lime juice in your water for some flavour? Or try carbonated water. I find that much easier to stomach than plain water right now.

@estrellita I just had my 1 hour test this morning and failed it by 10 points. Going in for the 3 hour later this week or next Monday. I only failed by 10 points and I'm hoping it's due to two christmas parties this weekend and not watching what I ate really closely.
I'm sorry. I have pcos and was on metformin so I wouldn't be surprised to be in the same boat. I don't test until after the holidays so I guess I'm blissfully ignorant for now. Good luck w the 3 hour test!

We may end up in the same boat though.
I failed my first one by 10 points also. I hope you have a better outcome!
I'm just anxious to get in to the endocrinologist to start discussing a plan. I really want to know how "bad" it is and how much I really need to watch things. I hope I'm borderline so it isn't super strict. I need ideas for meals because I eat carbs so much. I'm a MN girl, I love my carbs! I'm going to have a hard time coming up with meals that don't include pasta, bread, etc and not get sick of the same things over and over. And having to turn down Christmas cookies is going to be torture! I had a couple this morning at work before I got the phone call. They were delicious!

I'm sure the doctor will let you know how many carbs per meal or day to have. But for my own curiosity I just looked up the Silk brand sweetened vs. unsweetened. Unsweetened has less than 1 carb per serving and sweetened has 8. They do make vanilla unsweetened, if that helps.
My friend who had GD told me she did 30 g carbs at breakfast, 45 at lunch and 60 or less at dinner. I'm assuming she had a snack, too, because I believe you need 150 grams per day (dont' quote me on that).
After you see the endocrinologist, if you want any tips or recipe ideas, let me know and I'll ask my friend her advice.
Boo. So sorry you didn't get the results you wanted. Praying your appointment goes well and you find some recipes that you enjoy eating these last weeks. ((hugs))
My BFF just had GD and she said it really wasn't too bad--I think a lot of it is eating really regularly and having your snacks planned ahead. You still get to eat some carbs:).

I'm trying to keep a positive attitude and look at it as getting healthier, which is always a good thing. It would help if there wasn't candy on my desk when I get to work though, lol.

For a glucometer, check with your insurance to see if one is covered. I'm not sure if they are generally covered or not, but if so, hey, one less thing you have to pay for (or at least it will lessen your cost).
And I never actually said it, but I'm sorry. It sucks, especially before the holidays, to be diagnosed with GD.
I had a borderline high reading in my 3hr with my DD1, so my MW had me monitor my levels to be on the safe side. Insurance covered a glucometer and test strips, and the diet was totally reasonable. For me, the challenge was adding snacks and just remembering to test right on the hour or the two-hour mark.
My DD was born 1/1, so it really kept me in line through the holidays which was nice (& a little annoying ). I'm sorry you have to deal with it, but hopefully you will find that it is really manageable.
And, my DD was born perfectly perfect, 8lb1oz. I was afraid the whole time that something might be wrong for her even though my numbers were under control, but she was just fine

Thanks kams! I have no problem snacking, I just need to figure out what kind of snacks I can have that will still fill me up. Do they typically have people test? I was reading that not everyone has to other than at the doctor but maybe I read it wrong. Testing that much would really suck at work but gotta do what you gotta do I guess!

I think it's pretty standard to test 4x/day. So, once when you wake up, and then there's a range you want to be in if you test 1 hr post meal or 2hrs post meal. It's just a simple finger prick, and if you do it on the side of the pad of your finger, and alternate spots, it never gets too sore. Your Dr will have all of that info for you.
I think my snacks needed to be in the 15g carb range, so nuts/seeds and veggies/hummus was a favorite of mine. Most things are still "allowed," just within certain ranges/amounts. Sugary drinks were a 100% no-no in my Dr's eyes though.

I figured nuts were going to be a suggestion which sucks because I hate all nuts but cashews, haha. I do like hummus but of course I prefer it with pita chips. I've kinda figured a small piece of candy here and there is probably ok but I'm going to avoid stuff like that as much as possible. I really wish they'd call me so I can get a plan in place. It's so frustrating waiting on the doctor's office to call. I really think they would have called by now considering it's kinda important for me to probably stop eating some of the things I've been eating but I also don't want to buy food until I know for sure what is safe!
estrellita Did they tell you what your numbers were for the 3hr test?
I just had my baby Nov 20th, so I'm still very familiar with eating and tracking for GD - GD doesn't mean low carb, and it was actually pretty easy to manage once I figured out what foods worked for me and what didn't.
I had to test my blood glucose 4x/day (fasting, and 2hrs after breakfast, lunch and dinner), and ate usually every couple of hours. So Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner and at least 3 snacks.
As for milk - it is very diabetic friendly, at least it was for me and is listed on most of the diabetic meal plans I was given from 3 separate dieticians...It was one of my go to "snacks" because it was so easy and portable
I am getting ready to go out to eat with my hubby at the moment, but I could PM you the meal plans and information I was given from the dietician and gestational diabetes class that I took if you're interested? Let me know

Bonita No, they didn't give me any information other than my numbers being abnormal. My number from the first test was 150.
There is a girl at work actually due around the same time (she has a c section scheduled on my due date) that has GD and I think she was testing in the bathroom. She had a little bag thing and I didn't think about it until now. I've thought about asking her some questions but I don't know her all that well.
I'd love some information when you have some time! I want to plan some meals but Google wasn't super helpful when I was looking for guidelines. Thanks so much!
