If you honestly think that *everything* at your farmers market is local...well, all I'm saying is that at the wholesale market I work at I see PLENTY of farmers loading up on thursday & friday to cover shortages at weekend markets. And yes, a red delicious, golden delicious or anything else bought at Shaws, Kroger, etc is most likely grown last year and put into cold storage, then shipped as needed throughout the year. Or its shipped in from the southern hemishphere.
Honestly, I do think the vast majority of my farmers market is local. One of the many benefits of living in Hawaii.
I just wish the chain stores brought in more local stuff. Why do I have to buy onions from Mexico when Maui onions are right next door? This is what keeps bringing me back to whole paycheck. About half their produce is local.
Washington apples are more of an August/September thing, depending on the variety. My favorite snooty market labels where all their produce is from, and most of their apples right now are from New Zealand.

I don't know about a whole year, but cool, moist storage should keep apples for 6 months or so. I used to be able to get unlimited free organic apples from a neighbor, and I considered buying a small deep freeze and modifying the controller to "cellar" apples in it. I have had good luck canning apple slices in sugar syrup, for use in crisps and cobblers and pies. Plus my kids love to eat them- they call them sugar apples.
I know an organic apple farmer here in OH, last year had zero Ron because his trees didn't get pollinated. Sadness.
