I'm late on the bi-weekly travel PIP poll, but I'm also running low on categories. I was thinking that it might be nice this year to change things up and do a regular text poll, so that those who can't PIP can still participate. Thoughts? Opinions?
I was thinking that a "Firsts" poll would be an appropriate way to launch it, so...

First trip on a plane - I believe it was to Crested Butte, CO as a kid to go skiing with my whole family (parents, brothers, aunts, uncles, cousins, grandparents). It was such a fun trip! I still have awesome memories of it and wish we could get the whole family together on a trip like that again. Most of our family vacations were road trips when I was little, so I think I was around 8 or so when we went on this trip.
First time across an ocean - Pretty sure this was on a family vacation to Jamaica when I was about 10.
First overnight trip I planned on my own - The first overnight trip I think would be to a hotel on a lake about 1.5 hours away for mine and my boyfriend's (now H's) second dating anniversary. We would have been 21 at the time. For a bigger trip, it was our honeymoon a year and half later. We went to Las Vegas and stayed for 3 or 4 nights at the Wynn on the strip and then another 3 or 4 nights at the Ritz Carlton at Lake Las Vegas. It was awesome!
ETA: I'm dumb. I studied abroad in Spain when I was 19 for a summer and planned all of my weekend excursions myself (to Paris, Germany, and Cadaques in Spain). That was much more involved and exciting than my trip to the lake two years later, lol.
First stamp on my first passport - Italy. Went on a school trip when I was 16. I guess I didn't need a passport for Mexico, Canada, or even Jamaica back then because I had already been to those countries before I got my first passport.
First stamp on my current passport - Turkey (on my way to Italy, lol) in 2013. Had to take H to Italy since I had already been and he hadn't. It was his dream destination, and the best trip either of us has ever been on. Italy holds a special place in both of our hearts since both of our families immigrated to the US from Italy. We have a strong connection to the culture.
First trip on a plane? NJ to California for my uncle's wedding. I was about 3 or 4 years old.
First trip across an ocean (either by plane or by boat)? Ireland with my mom and sister, in summer 2001.
First overnight trip you planned on your own (without parents, school, clubs, etc)? MH (then-boyfriend) and I went to Washington DC after we graduated from college. That was our first overnight trip together.
First stamp in your first passport? the 2001 trip to Ireland
First stamp in your current passport? I don't even think I have any in my current passport, because my trips to Ireland (twice) and London were done in my maiden name passport. I've only used my married name passport to drive into Canada and they've never stamped it.
First trip on a plane? When I was 3 or so I flew with my mom from Michigan to New York to visit my grandmother. I can barely remember looking down at all the lights and thinking it was neat.
First trip across an ocean (either by plane or by boat)? When I was 15 I went to Hong Kong on a school trip. That was the the 2nd flight I ever took -- 14 hours!
First overnight trip you planned on your own (without parents, school, clubs, etc)? A trip from Michigan to NYC to visit my boyfriend (now husband) in college.
Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one's lifetime. Mark Twain

1. Trip to Florida to visit family and Disney World
2. Ferry to Block Island (off the coast of Rhode Island). I grew up in Rhode Island and spent a lot of time sailing around Block Island. Going cross the ocean would be to London England for a school trip.
3. Trip to Roanoke VA for my college roommate's wedding.
4. London, England as part of a school trip
5. I don't have any stamps in my current passport. Our recent travel has been cruising and the passport just has not been stamped in the Caribbean

First trip across an ocean (either by plane or by boat)? Family trip to Ireland...think it was toward the beginning of college (probably 2005 or 2006).
First overnight trip you planned on your own (without parents, school, clubs, etc)? I was in an LDR during my sophomore year of college, and I visited him a couple times. Once I flew to Buffalo, and once I took the bus out to western MA. Don't remember which came first.

Great questions!
1. My first trip on a plane was to Dallas, TX when I was a baby or toddler. We went to visit my mother's family a couple times a year while I was growing up. 2. First trip across an ocean was my freshman year of college. My mother, sister, and I went to Paris (and then to London) over my spring break. 3. I planned our spring break trip my senior year of HS. My friends and I went to Playa Del Carmen - A trip to Mexico (or similar) had been a longstanding senior tradition at my HS - I've heard that this doesn't happen anymore. Probably for the best, but it makes me sad - was such a rite of passage. 4. First passport stamp was Mexico - the trip above. 5. First stamp in my current passport is from Tokyo, Japan.

First trip on a plane? I was too young to really remember but I'm guessing it must have been flying to either KY or FL to visit family. First trip across an ocean (either by plane or by boat)? TheBahamas a few years ago. First overnight trip you planned on your own (without parents, school, clubs, etc)? A New England road trip after my freshman year in college. First stamp in your first passport? My passport doesn't have any stamps yet. First stamp in your current passport? See above
First trip on a plane? South Carolina to visit family, 6 weeks First trip across an ocean (either by plane or by boat)? Not sure how technical you want to be about a gulf vs. sea vs. ocean. So either Colombia at 8 weeks or Spain at 15 years. First overnight trip you planned on your own (without parents, school, clubs, etc)? I have no idea! Sleepovers in grade school? Camping during high school maybe? Certainly by college there were lots. First stamp in your first passport? Colombia to visit grandparents, 8 weeks First stamp in your current passport? Honeymoon was still in my old passport so I think it would be Indonesia in Dec. 2009
There are some countries that don't allow entry to people with Israeli stamps (or passports). Lebanon and Israel are (I think still technically) at war so Lebanon would deny me entry. The State Department will issue you a second passport if you need to travel to those counties or also if you routinely are without your passport (due to visa or residency processing) and you need to travel at short notice. Typically second passports had a shorter validity period )mine is 2 years and expires in July 2015. I won't replace it unless I need to go to Lebanon again before my other passport expires in 2019.
Very interesting, thanks for the explanation!
Yeah. Tons of countries in this region forbid entry if you have an Israeli stamp. UAE is for sure one of them. I really and to visit Israel, but I won't do it until we move away from Dubai. Maybe on our final trip home.

I think this is a great idea, GilliC. I dropped out sometime last year because I got tired of recycling photos from the same few trips of which I have a lot of recent digital pics. A lot of my older travels were taken with old cameras whose pics I haven't scanned yet. Then there are plenty for which I have taken pics but I've been lazy about getting them off of devices. Text polls would be a cool change of pace.
First trip on a plane? I think I was 6 and I went to Seattle/Puget Sound. It was a cross country flight. First trip across an ocean (either by plane or by boat)? Flight to the UK at 13. I was an exchange student in a rural English village in the Midlands. First overnight trip you planned on your own (without parents, school, clubs, etc)? Venice at 18. I've told that story before. I showed up without a hotel, walked around and got a half price discount to an excellent boutique hotel. Later that year, I toured a chunk of Scotland on my own with much better planning. First stamp in your first passport? UK First stamp in your current passport? Err, renewing that now but I had a UK visa as my first in the last passport. Other than the UK, my next stamp would have been probably acquired on a trip to Belgium via Eurostar from London in that passport but the actual stamp was from France due to Schengen. I look forward to christening the next soon, probably won't be in the UK this time though.

First stamp in your first passport? Australia when I was 16 as a People to People Student Ambassador. 5. First stamp in your current passport? I think this is Belgium. First overnight trip you planned on your own (without parents, school, clubs, etc)? That was the first time I met most of my husband's friends and my god that was a legendary weekend. We still talk about it all the time. I visited a bunch of friends at their colleges before that, but I won't count that.
