It's supposed to be a precaution just in case you end up needing emergency surgery. At this point, the guidelines are shifting in favor of letting mothers eat while laboring (which just makes freaking sense, it's worse than back-to-back marathons), so it's all very doctor/hospital dependent. I wasn't allowed anything with my first in 2008, the OB I delivered with in 2013 was a lot more lenient.
ETA: I was not induced with my first, but I was with my second.
wawa summed it up nicely
This actually makes me feel a lot better and it is good to know that some doctors are now more lenient.
There are also will come a point in the process where you are NOT hungry. The only reason I was dreaming about cheesesteaks for so long was because it took forever for my body to get with the program and really swing into active labor. The nurse and my midwife kept coming and checking on me and being all, "so...monitor says you're having regular contractions. Can you feel them?" And I'd be like, "oh yeah, I can tell when they happen." And they'd say, "ok good, rate your pain on a scale of 1 to 10" and I'd be like..uhhh...3? And they'd make the poop face. That's when I was HANGRY. It's not really typical for things to start off quite that slowly unless you're induced. And even then mine was slowish to get off the ground.
Once those conx. start really hurting and all those labor hormones start pumping all thoughts of food go out of your head. I didn't get hungry again until a good 4 hours after Shorti was born. And then I was STARVING. I ordered hospital food *and* sent my mom out for a hoagie.
*official apologies to everybody who keeps coming in here hoping for an update. I'll stop blabbering now.
Ok so baby is sunny side up and slowly turning. We basically had to pause pitocin and start over at 6:30 am. I am comfortable and just trying to keep my spirits up. Baby is a champ, very strong heartbeat. Still working on getting into the final stages of labor.

This is hard, I just want my baby.
Hugs and hair pats! Luckily you are super strong and totally ready for this sort of marathon labor. Fingers crossed for a smooth and speedy final stage.
I think you're in ultra territory - forget marathon! We all knew you & your H are endurance junkies
Also, you are a saint for not deactivating your facebook.
Inductions can be such a slow process, but you are doing an incredible job and your baby is amazing to tolerate labor so well. This is going to be one seriously rewarding finish line.

You can do this! I hope things move quickly once you get in those final stages. We are all cheering you on!!

Aww you are doing great! Did they say when they will break your water. Everything went SO fast once they did that..,

It's because I was already 2 cm. So they just jumped right to Pitocin - which means IVs and monitors and no food. It's all in case the pit causes fetal distress and they have to rush you into a C-section. Some hospitals are more strict with it than others. Mine is kinda middle of the road, and at least had me on all wireless/battery stuff so I could still get up and walk around as much as I wanted.
But I was SO DAMN HUNGRY.Â
And then I actually started to make progress, hit transition and puked up all my popsicles. So...yeah. That sucked too.
I'm not helping here am I? Labor kinda sucks. That's just how it is. Mine was longer and arguably more annoying than average because it was an induction. Most people get to labor at home for that first 5 cm or so (I think?) when they aren't in serious pain and can do things like walk around in real clothes without dragging monitors and IV's and eat whatever suits their fancy.   Â
In the grand scheme of sucky labors though - mine was fine. just long. Otherwise pretty smooth and cute healthy baby at the end, so all's well that ends well is my motto.
Nope, not at all.
I get pretty cranky if I don't get lunch. I can't imagine what I would be like after 36 hours and trying to evict a living creature from my body. Anyone want to be a surrogate?
I was worried about not being able to eat, but when I was actually in labor, food was the last thing I wanted. I tried to force myself to eat some toast before going to the hospital, but I could only eat a couple of bites. I did have some Gatorade at the hospital.

Water was broken almost 24 hours ago.
I honestly don't think my body has any clue what to do.
Happy to hear you and baby are still doing well; she already sounds like a champ! I hope things speed up for you quickly and go smooth. I hope this January baby is not trying to hold out until February!!

hope you are doing ok!! i had a long induction too, not nearly as long as this though, and i know how anxious you must feel. that baby will be in your arms before you know it. Savor every moment. Hope you are getting some sort of rest now, you will need it. congrats again
Good luck , you're doing awesome! I was inducted with my first, it's an unpredictable process and can be exhausting. Hardest workout ever. We're all thinking of you!!
