Ditto the above, plus if you wear contacts be sure to have your case, solution and glasses handy if you want to take them out, and if you have any medication you should take during the flight have it somewhere you can get to easily.
Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one's lifetime. Mark Twain

Sleeping pills.
Be comfortable as much as you can. Take out contacts. A neck pillow. Lots of layers. I can't sleep with ear plugs or eye mask, but I wish I could. There's always that asshole leaving their window open.
I would take ear plugs, moisturizer, a toothbrush, toothpaste, and clean underwear. I feel much better in the "morning" if I can rinse my face, moisturize, brush my teeth and put on clean underwear.
An alternative to 2nd pair of underwear (since it could be hard to change in a plane bathroom)...kind of TMI, but before my first overnight someone, (maybe GilliC) mentioned wearing a liner on your undies for the flight so when you get off and have been wearing the same pair for forever, you can toss the liner.
eta: I bring: -magazines -kindle -ipad -socks -pashmina type scarf -dress in layers -eye mask -ipod -ear plugs -gum -Have a glass of red wine -toothbrush/paste -deoderant -hairbrush -don't wear foundation
I usually on do a carryon so I bring everything with me :-P
That said, in my purse/easier access area I keep a scarf, ipod, book/magazine, water, snacks, contact case and solution and glasses, lotion, brush, toothpaste and brush. I usually hit the bathroom right before boarding and take out my contacts, and then right when we land I do a quick change of clothes, brush my teeth, and throw on some makeup.
And don't forget a pen for customs forms if you are flying internationally.
--makeup removing wipes --lotion/cream -- tooth brush + paste -- iPod -- Kindle -- a few snacks (a ziplock bag of goldfish crackers and pretzels, a box of raisins, an apple, a clif bar) -- a pen -- SLEEPING PILLS (even benedryl works) -- earphones -- I always buy a bottle of water after security to drink on the plane, I find that none of the airlines serve water enough! -- essential makeup (for me, mascara, powder, lip balm) -- mini hairspray and a brush -- an extra set of clothes, including some clean underwear -- neck pillow, the airplane pillows suck!
