Also we vacation at Fripp Island, SC. It is near Hilton Head and we love it. We were there in October and plan on going back in September. It is about a 9.5 hour drive from Northern Virginia.
lol Must be the swimming in canadian lakes thing, but I didn't find the water THAT cold in Maine. It is swimmable.
Well, I will admit that water needs to be WARM for me to go in. DH and DS? Not so much. We did find a swimming area on the island we took the ferry to and both of them got in.
I guess when I think of swimming at the beach, it's also about hanging out on the beach, playing in the sand, etc. The overall experience. That we did not get in Maine.

You would get that on the southern coast, ogunquit/wells, old orchard, etc.
Oh, yeah, this. Our Maine trip - in JULY - was not a beach trip. At all. Waiting for a ferry one day, we did walk down to the beachy area - and it was very rocky and the water was SOOOOOOOO cold.
Still an absolutely lovely vacation, but not a "beach" vacation.
We have several beaches with nice, soft sand. Crescent Beach State park is amazing, just south of Portland. I spend my summers at the beach in Maine. The ocean is colder, true. There's also Popham Beach in the midcoast, Scarborough Beach and some down the coast in Wells. Not to mention Old Orchard Beach.
And yes there is plenty to Do with kids in Maine. Believe it or not, some of us live here and have kids!

What part of Maine did you visit? Mount Desert/Acadia? Boothbay? Camden?
We went to OBX with the kids and loved it. There was lots to do, but we could also relax a little too. We tend to go to N. Myrtle Beach now instead, but my parents live there and free trumps all. I prefer OBX though.
North Carolina! Emerald Isle is beautiful and family friendly, and you could also consider Brevard, NC, too! Land of Waterfalls - plenty to do for kids from what I understand.
I'd love to hike and swim in the waterfalls, so my H and I are thinking about going this summer. We've never been but my brother who lives in NC loves it there. www.visitwaterfalls.com/

Well now I want to rent an RV and go to Brevard! It looks beautiful!

We go to OBX every summer - further south in Waves/Avon. We just got back from a long weekend in Deep Creek and may consider that this summer too. I just need to research on where to get a house that is lake front and has a pool or a community pool.

lol Must be the swimming in canadian lakes thing, but I didn't find the water THAT cold in Maine. It is swimmable. And the weather gets hot enough to want to swim. It is better in late july than early july obviously, but I've been there over the first week twice and it was pretty good.
Also the southern coast of maine has sandy beaches.
We go over the 4th weekend every year and always swim #hardyNewEnglander #theoceanissupposedtobecold #ifyourlipsdontturnblueyourdoingitwrong

Not exactly "on the coast" but what about Niagara Falls? Or Conway(ish), NH, for a peek at the Kancamagus Highway. THere are some wonderful trails and natural formations and crap and shopping.
But if you want to get out of the state, Ocean City, NJ is nice too.
Are you specifically looking for beach destinations?
Kind of, but we're open to other suggestions too.
We were just in Capy May last year, although I wouldn't mind going again, and his grandmother takes him to Williamsburg all the time.
Is there enough for kids to do in Maine?
I grew up in Maine. It is a kids' paradise. The fun thing about Maine is that the beaches are a little more "rough," which means tide pools, outcroppings of rock, cliffs, islands, hills, wild blueberries and little animals all around. Just hanging around your cabin can be an adventure.
It's a long drive from MD, though. Have you ever done Rehoboth Beach in Delaware to Cape May? My 4 year old loved that ferry ride so much. If you do want to go to Maine, let me know where you're thinking; I can give lots of recommendations.
