Ok, so I'm hoping to book a trip with DH to do a cruise out of Ft Lauderdale in early November. We will fly from Toronto to Ft.Lauderdale. My IL's, who will already be in Florida, will be watching DS for us. He will be about 6 months old at the time and likely still on breastmilk (I've got a ridiculous freezer stash already).
How do I transport enough for him for 5 days without us on the plane internationally? Is it better to check it or do carry-on? And how do I ensure that it stays frozen?
If its not feasible we might just get someone to watch him in Canada, but we'd much prefer to leave him in FL with my in-laws.
Also - what do we do for him regarding health insurance? We will purchase it for him, but should we have some type of letter stating my ILs are in charge in case he needed medical care?
Are you stopping in the US? I don't know about Canadian regulations, but in the US TSA only allows us to travel with the amount needed to reach the destination, so I'm not sure 5 days worth would work. Here's the TSA guidelines: www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtravel/children/formula.shtm
I also don't know how you'd keep that much milk frozen. As someone who loves to travel and exclusively BF for 10 months I know how you feel, but I think this may be tough to plan. I'd probably find someone in Canada instead or fly your ILs to Canada from Florida. Much easier than trying to figure out how to travel with all of that milk.
Can you ship it ahead of time on dry ice to your ILs? It might be expensive, but it seems like the surest way to get it there still frozen, with the least hassle.
If we could get fish shipped from Alaska to the east coast in June and have it arrive frozen, I'm guessing Toronto to Ft. Lauderdale would be fine.

It says it recommends you do but t doesn't give an exact amount. But then again, this IS the TSA. Lol.
I might either ship it ahead or find someone here. The latter is trickier though, my in laws are retired so it's easier for them.
I may call the airline and airport on a few separate occasions to see if I can get a definitive answer. Consistently.
The problem is that the word "recommended" leaves it up to TSA, which is never a good thing. I've had nothing but trouble when I've flown with breastmilk and I fly very often, so I would definitely err on the side of caution.
I think we've found a solution! My inlaws are only driving to Florida a few weeks earlier, so I will send t with them by car with dry ice. Then on the way home from our trip (I will have had to pump on the trip) I can TRY to bring it but if I have to throw it out, so be it.
