I am home sick today, and this thread has inspired me to re-watch last night's episode because, well, it's been ~18 hours since I watched it the first time and of course in the entirety of Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime nothing else sounds as good. Depending on whether or not it puts me to sleep I may return with additional commentary.
Remembering: this episode is good with backstories coming out.
I am sad that Anna was abused by her stepfather as a child, and that her mother refused to see it because the other option was being destitute. There is something so wrong with a culture where women are so dependent on men.
Also the whole story of Mrs. Hughes spending all her $ taking care of her sister at the expense of her own financial security. (not judging, just sad that she had to make that decision).
I totally agree with not being into the Carson/Hughes thing. It's too long between seasons and I forgot they'd had a moment on the beach at the end of last season until one of you guys brought it up last time. So the proposal seemed to kind of come out of nowehre to me. I can see them as best friends or a brother/sister type of relationship so, yeah, I agree with the "ewww!" sentiment.
I apparently completely forgot or missed that Rose and Atticus will be going to America, LOL. I feel like I need to re-watch, my memory sucks.
I also read that they are currently filming season 6 and that YES it is confirmed that Rose and Atticus will be in America for at least the first episode.
I figured they were going to go forward in time again next season, and America seemed like the safer place lest Downton turn into a fleeing the Holocaust story for her and her husband.
Which is also why DMS said she was leaving - the Dowager would be 105 by now
"Hello babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. On the outside, babies, you've got a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies-"God damn it, you've got to be kind.”
I loved this episode. I cried when they did they Sibil circle, when Lord G told Edith he knew about Marigold, and when Carson proposed to Mrs. Hughes. I am so sad that we have to wait so long for the next season.
If Fellows really did sell the rights and Downton could go on indefinitely, I feel like it will not stay the show that it is. I kind of want next season to be the last, especially if Maggies leaves!! That show will not be the same without her.
I like matthew Goode. I love him on the Good Wife so I'm looking forward to seeing him more here too.
Anna/bates - OMG!!!!!! I'm so,so,so done with that story. Just let the "what ifs" go unanswered. I dont' CARE what the police will do now that Bates has been cleared of the crime entirely. Just let this story die, Julian, please.
I can't wait, though, for Mary to find out about marigold.
I don't get Mary's new suitor thing... why was she interested in him? There didn't seem to be any real reason for her to be particularly attracted to him. Obviously she thought his actions were boorish and low class.

I almost hope she doesn't find out--I'm kind of uncomfortable thinking about it lol.
I hope when she finds out Edith with be living in London with her new husband. Running her publishing company. While Mary roams the halls of Downton wishing for someone new to torture!
I *finally* finished the episode - ZOMG IT WAS SO GOOD.
OK, here's the deal with Mary & her new suitor. He's handsome and doesn't take her guff, and kind of boorish - LIKE HER DEAD HUSBAND when we first met him....so yeah, the attraction is totally logical. I am glad he called her on her shit about the car, too, and then went all Dukes of Hazzard Downton to hop into the car & speed off.
I quite enjoyed drunk Robert, by the way And I really, really hope we continue to see Rose, Atticus and Tom over the next season. PLEASE!
And OMG EDITH WAS SMILING!!!!! I swear it happened at least TWICE this episode, I thought the world had turned in the other direction, like in the Superman movie.
Of course, loved the Barrow v. Snobby Butler storyline, Hughes & Carson (squeeee! - and I am right there with Stan - that was exactly how my english grandparents were together.) My favorite part of that is when Mrs. H was all "DUDE I thought you'd never ask!"
And, I ADORED when the Dowager rushed Mrs. Crawley into the separate room to shut the door & gossip! Those 2 are peas in a pod.
Also - my wish for next season....get Daisy out of the goddamn kitchen! TYVM.
So Mary's new suitor... if I were her, given how Matthew died, I would be terrified about dating a man who liked to drive fast cars. Maybe as long as he stays away from sun dappled lanes?
Re: Carson/Hughes, the impetus was definitely to have her be taken care of in retirement. Not that he doesn't like her. I think they're quite fond of each other, but being 60-something, it's like, "Yeah, sure, this seems like a good idea. Financial security."
I love Mary's haircut. I thought Mary was witty and sarcastic in the first 2 seasons and Edith was annoying as shit, but I'm changing my mind. Ever since Edith started writing for the paper and become more of a modern woman, I've been liking her. Of course, Sybil was my favorite. I don't really care at all who Mary ends up with. She has an heir, so no one gives a crap anymore, right?
I also didn't see my favorite line of the episode mentioned. In the beginning, when Donk was getting on the train, he said to Violet, "So nice of you to come see us off, mother," and she said, "Why do you always talk of me as if I were a salmon who laid my eggs in the gravel, then swam back to the sea?"
I was so over it when they were all, "Well, now that Bates is innocent and not on the run, they might arrest Anna AGAIN!" Please god, no. I've been over this story line since the first time he was in jail for his wife's murder.
I also loved when Robert said that Rose will love you forever if you show her kindness. And also when he was like, "Hey, I guess since Sybbie is leaving, Marigold can call me Donk, now!" *wink, wink* Robert is oafish, but I was digging him this episode.
Okay I guess I'm the last one to watch the episode...
I'll mention things that I haven't seen yet.
Loved the hunting scene with all the fancy people wearing their tweed outfits and all the support staff that had to arrange their little outing (dog handler, gun handler, etc)
Favorite line:
Banks: I'd cut my right arm off it would do any good. Barrow: Well, I don't think that would do any good Mr. Banks. We can't have you wobbly at both ends...

THIS!!!!!!!! OMG I totally cackled out loud.
I think I may need to watch the entire episode over again just because....I CANT WAIT ANOTHER YEAR!!! I need to find a way to watch online with the brits so I can gossip with RockNVoll and see the Christmas episode on Christmas.
