Also, other olds...do you remember listening to the local radio station to hear the school closings?? That's how we did it here, but we were lucky.to get ONE snow day, so it wasn't a regular thing
YES! And even when I was teaching and I got the text message and email blast, and the call from our staff phone tree, and my mom calling to tell me, I still would park it in front of the TV just to see our district roll across the bottom of the screen. Somehow that made it more official.
We always listened to the radio. They didn't even say your school name, every school had a number, and they would call out the numbers lightning fast. But they would say if "all Philadelphia public and parochial schools are closed". That was a good bet we were closed since we were right outside the city
The school districts just.cannot.win. For every person like you complaining it is too early, there is someone complaining it is too late. I just trust they are making the best decisions they can with the info they have.
We got a call and email last night at 11. I really don't care when it comes
$10 says kpouch herself would be the first to start bitching here if school was called the night before then nothing materialized
Omfg that kids shouldn't be so sensitive about being reminded of their dead/deployed/absentee parent for weeks on anticipation of the daddy daughter dance, but let's make life harder for lots of people to protect the autistic kids' sleep on the handful of snow days. Fuck.
It wasn't the point. I was asked for an example of a downfall so I provided one. I don't think the phone system should be done away with because one kid woke up but in the day in age where people are attached to their phones and not to talk on them a phone call is archaic and unnecessary.

What about the poors who don't have cell phones? What about grandparents raising their grandkids that don't text. you are the queen of needing all the accommodations for your special snowflakes but wanting everyone else to suck it up.

I said for my circumstances which is a community for middle/upper middle class/wealthy families. We don't have a part of town where people would be so low income they can't afford phones. I also know people who live in housing projects who have phones. It's not like having one is somehow only for wealthier families. I think there are more people annoyed by calls than there are people who require them or they wouldn't know. Grandparents could still use radios/tv. It's not like the old systems don't exist.
What accommodations have I demanded for my special snowflakes?

Well good for you and your wealthy neighbors. We heard you the first time. Is your bubble soundproof? Did you hear anything anyone said? Ever?
Good for you that you are surrounded by a bunch of rich people. Would you like a gold star on your forehead?
No but when people are saying "the poors needs the calls because no internet!!11!!!!" It doesn't really apply. I'm acknowledging in some communities they are essential. I think for me considering my area they're dumb/pointless.

I'm too lazy to read three pages of this. But our schools don't call. You're responsible for finding out on your own if there is a delay/cancellation. The local paper keeps the list updated all night long. I just check there before I leave work at 7am.
Seriously I don't buy any of this bullshit for one second.
Agreed. Otherwise, why do you even post here? Clearly none of us can comprehend the FWP of your super special enclave.
honestly, whenever I come on lately there is some ridiculous argument you are making and by the time I get to the end I don't even know where to start with all your backpedaling and special scenarios. It is exhausting

You could say the same thing about my area. I live in a nice upper middle class district as well. A woman on my street had no job, her house was being foreclosed and her husband left. She was visiting a food pantry to feed her kids that go to our school. You would never assume so looking at the pretty houses, but it happens everywhere. I'm going to bet she may not have internet. You can't assume everyone in your area is in your position. Besides, aren't school closings usually district wide? So you're assuming everyone in an entire school district is doing just fine.

I don't backpedal. Someone would say something doesn't work because x that doesn't even apply to what I'm saying and I acknowledge that isn't the case. That's not backpedaling. Just acknowledging when I say something that doesn't mean it applies for every imaginable scenario!!11!!

This! I have seen this same situation many times. The fact that you can't even comprehend that your perception of reality is so off blows my mind.
I just want to make sure we're all on the same page with aknowledging that not everyone has the same privileges as the upper middle class. Our school zone is super pricey and I guarantee you there are families here barely making ends meet so their kid can go to the top rated schools in the district. Hell, we would be priced out of this school zone if this house hadn't fallen into our laps at what we are paying.

well my school did opt in. you had to give them your number to be in the list. but what's the difference? the amount if time you spent justifying yourself on here you could have shot an email to the office administrator and said. please remove my number xxx-xxx-xxxx from phone system.
personally It's a great way to contact parents/guardians quickly with the same message. after sandy hook, I think every school needs a system in place for lock downs and such. we have had 2 lockdowns in the past year. one being escaped convicts. another being an unwelcome visitor in the area. I have been really glad to get that message of why the lock down instead of waiting for the news.
Uh because just making a phone call wouldn't have provided mindless entertainment?
I also agree with phone systems for lockdowns. We had one this year too when police were chasing a car theif. I don't think everyone needs a call at 4am when schools delayed because of snow. Most can figure it out by looking outside and can confirm with phone/internet/tv.

Right but most schools have one computer systems does all the calls.
Oh, and our school has had delays for power/water related issues. Never would have learned that without getting a call or checking my email. And while I usually check my email before school, it's not 100%.

We are the same exact scenario where we got a house in a district we couldn't have afforded at full price. I know many people at many different income levels. I don't know anyone who lives without cell phone and/or internet access.
