I gave my mom all of your suggestions. She took it to a different jeweler to see if she could get them to pull the number off the stone. It turns out it's actually a white sapphire and not a diamond. The store told her that the biggest tell tale sign was that the stone had microscopic scratches in it, where a diamond wouldn't do that.
She's going to call the police station today to see if anyone has reported anything and keep trying the park and HO with the updated description. It may be harder to track down the rightful owner without the number on the stone. This story wasn't nearly as cool as I thought it was going to be.

Remember how I lost my wedding ring last fall? I got the insurance money for it, but still haven't replaced it.
In January my mom took my cousin to one of the parks in their neighborhood. She was sitting on a bench watching the girls play and noticed something shiny half covered in the beauty bark. She bent down to pick it up and it was... a 1.5 ct diamond. She took it to the jeweler and had it verified.
Since January she's put up flyers around the park, contacted the HOA to put a blurb in the monthly newsletter and also posted on their FB page. No one has come forward to claim the diamond. She's going to keep trying to find the owner, especially as the weather stays nicer and more people use the park.
Right now, the stone is hanging out in a zip lock bag in their kitchen. lol.
But seriously, any other thoughts on locating the rightful owner? My mom doesn't want it. If no one claims it then I guess I'm getting an upgrade? But I honestly don't want it if someone out there is frantic for it. I would have bad karma forever.
I feel bad for the original owner, but it sounds like your mom has gone about trying to find them as well as possible. If I lost a 1.5 ct diamond, I would be actively trying to find it, and I guess no one is really missing it if there haven't been any signs left at the park in these last 6-8 weeks. Hopefully the owner steps up soon, or had an amazing insurance policy on it.
I think this is a sign from the diamond gods that you are meant to have an upgrade Or a bigger crack rock ring.

This is where I'm at too!
For that persons's sake I hope my mom finds the rightful owner. I think I would be physically ill losing something that expensive.

I would maybe contact the police to see if anything similar had been reported stolen. Maybe a thief lost it and therefore isn't putting up signs. Or maybe check with the crew that does maintenance on the park?

This thought never even crossed my mind, but both of those are such a good idea! I'll email my mom.

Can you see if your mom can check with another jeweler for a laser inscription/lot number or something? I know that some diamonds are inscribed these days to help identify them if they're lost.
Also, if no one comes forward and it doesn't get claimed, would you take it to a jeweler and get credit for it and get a new/bigger diamond? I'd probably do that to keep any bad karma/juju off of you for using the original diamond. Plus you could add some cash to what you get and get the perfect one you want!

Also good points we didn't think about. I'll send all of these other suggestions to my mom.
I don't think I'd be able to trade it in for anything bigger. (how would one go about doing that if you didn't buy it?) 1.5 CT is already going to look ridiculous on my finger. H thinks I should make it into a pendant or something.

The person who lost is may have no idea when or where it fell out. Gosh, I mean I could be running around all day and not notice that a diamond had fallen out. I'm sure a stone that big was insured. I'm guessing they just filed a claim right away rather and undergoing the impossible task of finding a needle in a hay stack.
