I had the first initial though re the skirts, but they look like they're (just barely) finger-tip length, which is what my school dress code was.

I learned from a secretary at work who has teenagers that schools around here allow the kids to wear those see-through lace tops (you know how it's a trend to wear a neon bandeau bralette underneath?). Yeah. So, I think I'm now an old when it comes to teen fashion. And those dresses generally are lovely.

Yeah, I think they only look short because their legs are just SO long that even if they follow the finger tip length rule, there's a lot of leg showing, which makes it seem at first glance like their skirts are too short. I mean, MO is a very tall, leggy woman at 5'11" and Malia looks like she's already taller than her. Sasha isn't far behind. That little girl is for sure taller than I am and I'm 5'7".

I lol'd at the mentions of them being tall... Most likely Scarlett is going to be like this, and unfortunately for her, her mama knows all about being all legs, which means I won't be buying the "I'm tall" excuse.

That said, I think sometimes when you are leggy (at 5'10" with a ridiculously short torso I'm familiar) even if things are close to the appropriate length (like fingertip) they look shorter and you have to be careful of that. Well you don't have to, but if I pay your bills, you have to.

I think their dresses are lovely and appropriate if a bit too short for my taste. But it's definitely the style these days. I have 3 female cousins who range in age from 19-23 and those are the exact type dresses and lengths they are wearing.

I think they do that so it's balanced.  Dad Doppelganger, Mom, Dad, Mom Doppelganger. It's not weighing like it's all the Michelle genes on the left and the Barack genes on the right.

I wonder how much time the Obama's spend thinking about the girl's skirts? As the first family they must have the resources to get almost any article of clothing they want custom made so it must be a conscious decision. If we are talking about it, you just know some social conservative is going to go off on it. Maybe they don't care? The social conservatives hate them anyway and talking about the kids hasn't gone so well in the past.

They probably don't care.  I would wager that they are parents of teenage girls and have decided to pick their battles and skirts at that length just isn't one of them.  They're not exactly bordering on indecency or anything close to it.

As someone who is 5'8" with freakishly short T-Rex arms I can't hate on the length of the girls' dresses. Dresses that short aren't something I would choose but they look happy and age appropriate. I used to wear scandalously short skirts and shorts when I was young and skinny and always fell on the right side of the dress code because while I was showing a mile of leg my hem was always at my fingertips. I love dresses and skirts but my choices at my height are maxis, scandalous, or sister wife. I just resorted to ordering petite length skirts from Land's End in my quest for something that comes a bit above the knee but not so short that my good china is on display.

The girls look so lovely. I've always appreciated how much of a family unit they are - it was one of the reasons I voted for Obama. Some candidates seem to use their families as props, but the Obamas have always looked to me like they are a genuine loved-up family. The dresses are cute and completely appropriate. You should see what the teens in my area wear

Yes, seriously. Lay off on the shortness. It's gotta be especially hard for them to find length appropriate dresses that fit perfectly in all other areas, given their financial situation. People that poor are resigned to Walmart/goodwill clearance racks only. It's not like they have access to tailors or designers or anything like that. So yeah, totally understandable why their dresses are short. ;-)
