Wow! 8:1 are pretty much the bare bones minimum places have to have to operate here. You have to be 6:1 to be naeyc accredited.
You will not find a 6:1 here unless you are looking at the toddler classes. We have never had a problem with the ratios. Last year DS was 11:1. I think it was a great preparation for kinder at 22:1.
Holy shit at 22:1!!!!! Elementary school is 13:1 here and they do 10:1 for k. I seriously feel bad for teachers who have to work like that.

DS2's kindergarten class is 19:2. All of the first grade teachers got associates about a month ago and DS1's class is now 25:2. We passed a bond measure for school improvement and the rumor us that they are considering just building a new, larger school with more classrooms than they currently have.

Then you should feel sorry for 99% of teachers. That is a ridiculous statement. The majority of teacher sin this country do not have 13:1 ratios. The kids are learning and it's pretty much what is expected as a public educator.

The average in the state overall for public schools is 15:1. Private schools here are 11:1. Apparently all teachers need to move to ri. Teachers can do their job better and kids learn better with lower ratios. I'm not sure why you find that ridiculous.

You do understand that an average 15:1 ratio doesn't mean that is even close to the realistic ratio in a school right? DDs school has 20 extra teachers. Anyone with a teaching license is counted in thse averages which means, counselors, art, music, admin. So sure if you count the extras the ratio looks amazing which is what all these studies do. I don't but for one second that RI has a 13:1 ratio in every elem class. Sped maybe.

FWIW, those numbers are likely crap. They indicate an average if you divided every student by every faculty member -- they are rarely if ever (outside of self contained preschool classes) what an actual classroom looks like.
Two kids take latin, 32 in a math class. It all averages out.

I find it ridiculous that you are so out of touch you actually think this is the norm.

Lol we posted the same thing. The fact that she doesn't know this to begin with leads me not to believe her 13:1

Perhaps, but I know for a fact that our school k is 10:1.

A competent teacher is trained to teach more then 10 kinds per class. Our education system needs a lot of work but a ratio of 13:1 is way down on my list.
There is no way that is the norm. Our class sizes are 20-22 per teacher in K-2 and 24-27 in 3-5 with no aides in any grade. I'm sure they might love to have 13-15 but it's not going to happen.
? That just says how big classrooms are not how many teachers/aides are in them.
Reality check for you. Very few public schools have aides outside of sped programs. I have taught in three states and never seen a classroom aide outside of sped. I very seriously doubt all of RI has two teachers per elem class.

Also I don't really have a do in this fight. I teach sped so my numbers are always amazing, and my kids are doing just fine in their 22:1 and 17:1 classrooms.
