My problem is that I have like 6 sizes of clothes. Realistically I know that if I somehow get from a 16 to a 6, I will want to buy all new clothes, but throwing the smaller sizes out feels like a surrender. And I have the space to store them.

When I was pg and only had a limited amount of maternity clothes it was so freeing. I feel like I also looked more put together because I had outfits instead of just random clothes. I vowed that I would do the same with my regular clothes but have never mnanaged to. My issue is I keep tons of clothes "just in case".
But sometimes I think about how happy I am with my clothes when I'm on vacation. I've only packed things that I love, that are comfortable, that work in multiple situations, that layer well and all go together, etc ... so I definitely see the appeal.
Maybe I'll see how you feel after a couple months. I do have way, way too much shit.
See, I pack a different outfit for each day of vacation. And I love each outfit! My idea of "packing light" is to bring shoes that coordinate with several outfits. LOL.
I'm the same way. I usually pack two outfits per day just in case. I like options! lol
We put away a TON of clothes into storage when we started our reno in February. I kept only my favorite clothes out, spanning two season (sill me; I thought Spring would start before today). When we got them all out of storage yesterday, I had a field day with my Goodwill pile. I asked of every single item, whether or not I missed it, and got DH to do the same. Collectively, we created a pile of clothes to donate that completely covered our bed and was at least 6" high.
I'M SO HAPPY.
Not that I'm remotely fashionable, and certainly not enough to even know what a "capsule" wardrobe is. But I'm certainly happier to have simplified my closet to only the things that I love. We've also instituted a one-in, one-out rule.
I really want to do this. It would save so many frustrating mornings that end in a pile of clothes on my bed and me in an outfit I hate, running off late to work.
I think i may try to get there this week. I am on spring break with nothing else to do...
i'm a saver when it comes to nicer things, whether it be clothes, specialty tea, candles, whatever. i never want to "waste" them, so i just never use them lol.
BUT when i don't have any options other than to wear the stuff i really love, boom! i actually wear it. because, you know, that's all there is. and i'm loving it. stuff is meant to be used, not saved for another day. (this was the hardest thing for me to get used to, fyi.)
This is my biggest issue in life. I don't want to use things so I save them until they are expired/out of style. I have done it so many times. I even do it with nice wrapping paper. It's so dumb.

I'm working on this because it appeals to me on different levels: organization, streamlining, knowing myself more, taking care of my possessions, investing in quality, not gaining a bunch of weight, having a more timeless style...
I purged so much over the past few years. I went from corporate to casual work, gained weight, got pregnant, became a SAHM, and then lost weight. I have shed a few wardrobes along the way and finally admitted that if I am my dream size again, I won't want to wear business suits from 2004.
All my clothes fit in my dresser, ONE Rubbermaid that I trade out sweaters for winter and tanks and sundresses for summer, and half a small closet. I have no idea the number though. I still purge and no longer feel guilty donating gifts or perfectly fine things I just don't wear. I used to keep things for years just to, I don't know, be sure I wasn't going to wear them or something.
My capsule mentality meant I really looked at my existing wardrobe and saw what one or two items would come in and add more life to my stuff and give me new ideas. I used to just buy anything I thought I were cute. I was the queen of owning 9 floral dresses at once or whatever I liked that season.
I think I would do so well with a capsule wardrobe. I love clothes but I end up wearing the same things all of the time. And I SAH so I don't really have separate settings to dress for. My problem is letting go of things, I have so many beautiful pieces but I just don't wear them because of changes in my body or changes in my lifestyle. I have been donating bags and bags full over the past few months, but I know I can still get rid of a lot more.

I noticed this with DH's clothes and I just need to sit down and do it. He has 2 suits with a few shirts that go with each. A pair of shoes for each suit and a few ties and TADA! He looks put together every time. I really need to be better about this.
I am not too far from that. My closet is small (tiny) and I have some smpty space in it to be able to move clotehs around. When it gets full enough that I can't see well, I purge. And my winter/summer stuff all lives in it (except jackets), I don't store half my wardrobe or anything like that.
Oh and sometimes I miss somthing I purged, but then I remember I hadn't worn in it over a year. And sometimes I'm jealous when I see OOTD pictures and realize you guys don't rotate the same few pieces over and over agaun, lol. But I really don't have the space, so I'd rather not keep stuff I hate.
I got rid of a massive amount of clothing when we moved. I have half of a sliding door closet, the shelf above my half, and a three drawer container below it. We don't even have room for a chest of drawers or night stands. I keep my shoes on a 36 pair rack on the back of a door. Literally every article of clothing except coats fits in this space.
The only thing this has accomplished is that I buy more seasonal/trendy clothing, donate them, and then go buy some more.
And someday when I build my dream house I'll have the biggest fucking closet filled with all the shit. And a chair so I can sit and stare at all of it and laugh about the time we lived in a damn cottage with no closet space.
I find this idea appealing, but I don't know how I would do in practice. I actually have the opposite problem of what a lot of you describe - I don't like repeating outfits, so I sometimes end up wearing really weird random stuff because I'm trying to put together items that I haven't put together before. I don't know if I'd do better if I had fewer choices (I mean, it would limit my possibility of leaving the house looking stupid if I was more purposeful) but I might also be tempted to go buy new stuff if I felt like I didn't have enough variety available. IDK.
I do share a small house with a super small closet with another human and 2 dogs, though, so it would really be great to get rid of some stuff. I pared down a lot when I moved into this place, and then more when BF moved in with me, but I bet I could get rid of a lot more things and never miss them.
Has anyone else been planning to do this since high school? lol. I remember wandering through my closet as a teenager lamenting. IF ONLY I HAD LIKE TEN PERFECT OUTFITS, THEN I WOULD NEVER BE INDECISIVE ABOUT WHAT TO WEAR.
I don't think it's pretentious at all. I have one and love it...since I like every single thing in my closet and I have outfits matched that I love, I never lament "I have nothing to wear!" while staring at a closet crammed packed with clothes.
ETA: I think I get this mentality from my family living overseas...most of which only had/have a small dressing wardrobe for their clothes but still looked put-together every day.
See, I pack a different outfit for each day of vacation. And I love each outfit! My idea of "packing light" is to bring shoes that coordinate with several outfits. LOL.
I'm the same way. I usually pack two outfits per day just in case. I like options! lol
I do this too...BUT I am very much aware that I will consistently pack the same pieces and do laundry before packing to make sure they're clean and available - despite the fact that I have a stuffed closet and drawers. Packing seems to highlight to me that I want the same items with me and ignore the same ones. But when leaving town, purging isn't a priority.

With losing weight and knowing I'm moving to a place with smaller wardrobe space I've done this - over the past few months I've gotten rid of about 50% of my clothing and I'll get rid of more over the next month (before we move). It's been a good feeling. I know that I fit into everything, that I like it and it's reasonably classic. I've also had the chance to see the holes in my wardrobe and to see what I wear the most (so I can either buy what I need to fill the holes or realise I just won't wear that sort of item - example, I now own no trousers, but that's because I just don't wear them).
