Unless you can anchor it to the wall, there's no way I'd do that. Forget about books and knickknacks falling off the shelf, the entire thing could tip onto you.
I will ask H about anchoring it to the wall. He has done that with our Billy bookshelves.
I am not sure the entire thing would really tip, though, as the bed foundation and mattress, which are pretty heavy, would be up against the lower half of the shelf.
Oh, I missed the part where you said it would be on the floor and your bed pushed against it. In that case, you'd be fine.
I dont think it would be the best option, though, because you'd basically be losing 3/4 of the storage with the bed blocking it anyway.
Yeah, I think I like this idea better than the giant Kallax unit. I guess I am most concerned about hitting my head on it somehow? I don't know. H seems to be really sold on the Kallax thing. On the bright side, if we get it and I hate it, I can easily put Kallax units in other rooms and use them for assorted storage.
Bah. I think the Brimnes is the most elegant solution, but I have to figure out how to get the freaking thing. Maybe I will suck it up and pay for delivery.
Who knew this would be so complicated?
Aren't you driving the truck to Milwaukee?
I also need to buy IKEA stuff so I plan to get my truck in the morning, go straight to IKEA to buy what I need. Then pack my apartment up and drive to Brooklyn.
Would that work for you?
I think that's too much. We have movers coming at 8:30. I would like to get out of town by noon because rush hour seems to start at like 2:30 here. If we go to Ikea, we risk getting into heavy traffic on 270, and H will not want to deal with that.
Plus, I will be in the car with the kitties. So someone would have to wait in the car with the AC on while the others go to Ikea.
Another vote for wall mounted storage or side tables. I think the Expedit is too big and bulky for the bedroom I prefer less clutter and a more calm space.
Can you find me teeny tiny side tables?
The wall is 107 inches from doorway to the corner. The bed is 76 inches wide. So we only have 31 inches of total wall space to work with.
How about 1-2 Lack 12" shelves on each side? Like this:

I think it would look really cluttered if it wasn't maintained perfectly (certainly my night tables do, and they aren't nearly as focal-point-y as that headboard would be) and frankly I'd worry about how sturdy they are over time. I love the look of bookcase headboards, though, and did a little googling. Wayfair(dot)com has a bunch of options. www.wayfair.com/Bookcase-Headboards-C1826835.html3

We had a 4x4 expedit we used as a headboard in our old house. It sat on the floor.
Maybe we are boring in bed but there is no way that thing moved at all, much less let anything fall on us. It was full of books and not bolted to the wall either.
I didn't love how it looked but it was really nice to have the storage in our very tiny bedroom - we had no room for nightstands bcs the room was narrow plus door placement.
What about narrow floating nightstands something like this Very easy to DIY.
But why? I'd need the same amount of wall space. Seems easier just to get a regular skinny nightstand.
It can't be knocked over and it is easy to swiffer up the pet hair. Though I would likely do an articulating wall mounted lamp since I can see a kitty knocking over a lamp like that.

LOL, all this hand-wringing was for naught. Our friend went in an re-measures. H wrote down the measurements wrong, and there is enough room for a Hemnes bed frame and matching night stands.

Ok not to be TMI but that wouldn't work for me simply because of sex. Not sexy to have books flying off hitting you in the face will doing the deed. Just something to think about!
Also isn't your new place huge?!? Is there a specific reason you need a book shelf in your bedroom?
No, I don't need a bookshelf there, but I need a nightstand. A place to put a water bottle and a box of Kleenex and my chapstick and my phone since I have become addicted to falling asleep to cello music.
And we have not had a lot of luck finding nightstands that will fit with the king bed. So my thought is to go up. I wasn't planning to put books on the shelf like in that picture. Hell, one of the cubes would likely get a cushion in it so it can be a cat cube (of course it would, LOL).
We could potentially orient the bed a different way, but it's slightly weird that way. The master bedroom clearly used to be 2 different rooms, and there is a seam in the floor in the middle. Add in 2 radiators, 2 windows, the door, 2 closet doors, and the bathroom door, and despite being huge, we are realizing the room is a bit oddly laid out for placing a bed and nightstands.
If that's truly all you need it for, just get one of these. In our 100 year old rental house the only place our bed would fit prevented us from having side tables at all (in between door to bathroom and door to closet). So this is where my glasses, cell phone, chapstick, and kindle lived for that time period.
ETA: And it's only $9! And in this picture it looks like it sits on the floor, but it's actually got a flap that sandwiches between the mattress and box spring and it hangs above the ground. Never fell out.
