Congrats! You did great! My first was a 5:30 as well, and pretty similar in that it was much slower than my training runs. I far prefer marathons with just the 26.2 distance b/c everyone is in the same boat (no fresh legged relay-ers) and you don't need to worry about the 5k/half finishers taking all the booze and food, lol. Whether you decide to do another full or stick to the half distance, I highly recommend flat coastal SC in January
Well this gives me hope lol. One of the first things I said to my h was, "to even qualify for Boston I would have to take 2 hours off that time! That's not even possible!" LOL.
I said the same thing, after I crossed my first finish line in 5:10. They get better!! LOL
CONGRATULATIONS! The first one is so difficult to predict. You just don't know what to expect. It's so hard to push through, when it gets tough like that. You did it! You should be very proud.
I laughed at your parents waiting outside. LOL Parents are the best spectators. My mom has been there for one of my fulls & she was such a proud, hilarious, fan-girl. You would have thought I had won the whole damn thing.

Congrats! My first ( and only) marathon time was 5:36. It was a tough pill to swallow when I saw my time. I just look at it as I should be able to have a mega PR when I run the distance again. No doubt, your next will be a huge PR!
Thanks for posting this recap. I'm registered for my first full this fall and I really appreciate hearing all of these experiences, especially the mental aspect of the marathon.

Congrats! You did awesome to keep going and kicking it in at the end! I'd much rather struggle mid-race and finish happy! Great job!
That sun got HOT even tho my car told me it was only 63 or something at 9:30am! Psht! It felt hotter!
I ran the half and yea...definitely not my favorite race. Also, there was beer + BBQ after?! I totally missed all of that. I suck at this big racing thing! I just bailed out as soon as I grabbed my water!

Yup, they get better! I promise!
My first was pure hell, my second was almost a 1hr PR simply because I knew what I was in for. My third...will probably be hellish again, but that's because I'm an idiot, not because of the distance!

I can't believe you did that! Not that I can't believe YOU did that, just that I can't believe that it's even possible to run that far! What an amazing accomplishment!
Congratulations marathoner, you did it! Those hills sound brutal.
My first was similar (sans hills) - I projected a 4:30-4:40 finish based on my 20 miler. And then the day came and...not so much. I just couldn't get going from the start. Sometimes it just happens - and at really inopportune times. I hope you enjoyed the race though. I'm impressed you were moving around the day after - all I could do was shuffle (and eat) the next day.
Congratulations! I agree- relayers can kiss my ass and also, marathons are freaking hard. I'm planning on crushing my first marathon time at my second, much flatter marathon too.
And I also had the same sinking feeling at mile 13. Somehow, on race day, getting through the first half was so much more of a struggle than anticipated- to have a second half after that felt enormous
