Thursday night, our cat (3 years old, fixed since kittenhood) went straight up psycho on our dog (7 years old, fixed). My BF has had the dog since just before her 1st birthday and the cat since 8 or 9 weeks old. The cat and the dog LOVE each other and have since the beginning. The BF, cat, and dog moved in with my (and my roommate and his dog) nearly a year ago. Things never hit any rough patches even a little. All 3 animals very peacefully co-exist.
I took Lucy (the dog) for a walk on Thursday night. Maybe 25 minutes. We got home and Sadie the cat was intensely sniffing Lucy's tail and legs and butt. This didn't strike us as odd as she regularly does this. I went to take a photo of it and that made Lucy want to turn around. Sadie jumped on her face and did the cat growl/hiss/catfight noise. My BF broke up the fight. It happened at least 2 more times on Thursday night. We decided to give the dog a bath. And things seemed to be fine. Friday however, we decided that we did not want a fight breaking out in our room. Lucy bunked with our roommate's dog and Sadie had our room to herself. Friday night everything was fine; and things have been fine (yesterday they were in the room alone most of the day, no blood or chunks of fur anywhere) until today when Sadie decided she wanted to attack Lucy again. I got it broken up thankfully because we were right next to Sadie's cat carrier that she loves. All day I have been keeping them apart. My BF got home and we re-introduced them. Things seem to be fine right now.
Obviously I am very nervous about all of this. I live in the PNW so one thought is that we are going to have an earthquake because of the whole cats act weird before natural disasters, thing.
Anyway, we are going to get a calming kitty spray and maybe other things that look like they might be helpful at the pet store. But I am looking for ideas of how to make it stop, tricks that work, reasons it could be happening, anything.
These two have been best friends for more than 3 years and so this is VERY ODD.
Here are pictures for reading. If Sadie isn't turned the right way, I'm sorry. Dang TinyPic
