Google your state and "car title transfer." I can't remember where you are, but I googled FL and a bunch of others and they all seem to be done right there on the spot. You should be able to make an appointment online for the DMV too.
Thank you, I will do that.
I would call and double check that you need to retitle it. My grandma gave us her car and we went through the trouble of retitling it but when we finally went to sell it to the dealer he told is we didn't have to, she couldn't just signed it over or we could've shown proof of inheritance. Waste of money, but now we know better! (We are in TX though)
If you don't want to go to the hassle of selling private party, at least re-title the other vehicle and use both as trade ins.
We had thought about that, but the logistics are hard. We'd have to find a dealer with the van we want, who is willing to take BOTH old cars and not shaft us on the trade-in value for either old car. Seems daunting. Since we need the van soon-ish and re-titling takes time, it seems to make more sense to trade in the Prius and sell grandmas car private party once we get the new title.
Retitling took like 15 minutes when I went to sell my dads car. I showed the death certificate and the paperwork showing the estate went to me, got a stamp and went to meet the guy I was selling the car to so he could then get it titled in his name. You have a lot of excuses for why everything is too much trouble to buy this van. You need to make the time and get stuff done. If you cannot get your husband to help, get a friend to go with you to keep track of the kids. Also, you may want to rethink this van if it is going to wipe out your savings so much.
Also I am lazy as hell and have sold a car on craigslist. Two hours of my life was worth the extra $2100. The market for cars under $5k is always very good.
Dollars per hour, you'll make way more money selling private party than trying to knock money off the dealer's price. Plus you do it at your house, on your own terms.
Of course, we buy and sell private party and aren't married to any particular brand (DH has a Pontiac and I have a Honda, we've both driven other stuff previously.)
