I mostly text when getting to know someone, simply because I am better with writing than talking. J and I text daily and he calls me a couple times a week to just talk. I'm about 50/50 on texting and calling in general with people I know already.
mp is right. This online dating era of guys always looking for another seems to ring true. I feel like that is another reason why I'm not dating at the moment.
I'd say you're being a little crazy if you NEED a response within an hour. Just because everyone has technology at their finger tips these days does not mean you are owed an immediate response.
Y'ALL TOLD ME I WAS OLD, TIRED AND STRANGE WHEN I SAID I NEEDED TO TALK TO FOLKS ON THE PHONE BEFORE MEETING THEM!

I actually like to talk on the phone rather than text. I hate it how texting takes a whole lot of time while I can be done with it with a minute conversation.
I don't have talking on the phone as a requirement but I do try.

You've obviously never had a phone call with my mother.
I talk to my mom for like 15 min on the phone even though I see her every day when I pick up DD.
I haaaaate talking on the phone. I think it was months after NG and I started seeing each other before we actually talked on the phone for the first time. We text back and forth pretty much constantly though.

I think it's ok for you to prefer talking by phone. It just might be good to not make it a requirement. I understand that it's something that helps you to feel comfortable but you might be surprised and find out that you connect with a future guy differently. I guess it's just good to be a bit flexible about your approach. There may be a guy who you will ultimately click with who is not comfortable with talking on the phone before a date. On the other hand, you may find that a guy is a smooth talker on the phone but not good for you in other ways. Again though, nothing is wrong with your preferring the phone.
When I was online dating recently, I didn't really like talking on the phone first very much but that's probably because I did it when I was younger. I dated a couple of guys with great voices who were totally romantically wrong for me. I will say though that I LOVE talking on the phone when in a relationship.

I THINK I HAD YOUR BACK ON THIS THEN, TOO! If not, I'm kind of an adshole. I'm a talker. I don't wanna type. I can call you and get it out faster than texting and waiting and not getting inflection/sarcasm via text. Ugh. JUST FUCKING CALL ME!
I hate talking on the phone. I would much rather just meet someone at a very public place and gauge their facial expressions in conversation than interpret their tone/vocabulary/etc over the phone.
The only people I talk to on the phone are my parents (every Sunday since I left for college!), my aunt and my grandma...oh, and stbx, but that is coming to an end ASAP.
