Oooh, Target had sample sizes of the Mixed Chicks products! Also, I just spent like $30 on hair products between me & the kids.
Target's sample sizes and this natural cashier whose line I go through whenever she's working are turning me into the worst product junkie ever. I do so love the combined ability to test a $12 product for $4 and to get her instant reviews after she scans them.
I have another video, lol. I decided this weekend to give Whitney's most defined twist out technique a try. I have to say I love the results and the fact I used no heat to stretch my hair. I definitely prefer my twist outs on stretched hair. When I do it on damp hair the shrinkage is ridiculous. For the twists I used the Shea Moisture shea butter transitioning milk and some homemade flaxseed gel.

Watching the video now, and oh my gawd, this is why I will never be able to do a cute natural style on my own. Wtf! This has like 87 steps! Make homemade flaxseed gel, modify a Denman brush, cowash, detangle, Curlformers, dryer, finger detangle, use the Denman, fancy French braid like twists, bantu knots, unknot, pin, perm rod, wtf!
You both made me decide to make the homemade flaxseed gel, though. Oy.
Aloe Vera gel is really good too. Just take fresh aloe vera leaves, cut open and scoop out the aloe Vera gel. Some people add vitamin e powder or oil to keep it from changing colors.

You are much craftier than me. It won't be easy for me, I guarantee lol, but I'm going to try it anyway.
By the way, my stylist randomly started talking to me about the curl sponge the other day. I only knew what she was talking about because of you lol. But she uses it on some of her clients, which seems like a major hustle to me, but whatever.

LOL re curl sponge. Yeah, I can see her selling them, but using them, yeah, she's taking them for a ride.

Those who have BCed and grown their hair out, especially if you've done it multiple times, how often are/were you getting your hair trimmed throughout the growing process.
NitaX I'm tagging you, because I know you've done it a couple of times.
My hair seems to be cooperating for once, and seems to be growing all over. I've had issues with my crown and back sides not growing, and then when I go get it cut, stylists want to chop it all off.
I'm excited for the growth, but nervous for when I go to the stylist for a check-in, that they'll cut quite a bit off. I am happy, that I've identified two places I can go to for styles/check-in's when necessary.

Lol! I know what you mean. I had already modified a denman brush but I like detangling with a paddle brush better for my hair. I saw this video months ago but never did it because I never had the time. But it was actually pretty easy. I did it in a two step process. I co-washed and did the Curlformers Saturday night. Since I didn't like my hair out and I didn't want shrinkage yesterday I wore it up in a ponytail. Then last night I took it down and did the twists. It probably took me fifteen minutes.
I actually think I made the gel wrong. It doesn't seem thick enough but I still used it. Lol!
orangeblossom I've had my ends trimmed a total of 4 times by a stylist since the BC. I went every six - eight months initially. I did a slight dusting on my own once. I've had more trims this year because of postpartum shedding and wanting to make sure I didn't have breakage. The stylist was actually surprised how my hair looked since it had been like a year since my last trim when I saw her.

Thanks for the input. I haven't had my hair cut since March, so it's probably time. 6-8 months, seems like a good time frame.
Hey pretty ladies! Sorry I didn't think about this sooner - I put the link to this thread in the sticky thread up top. Let me know if you don't want it there.
I was rounding on a patient at 5 am. The resident on another team came up to me and asked my name so I introduced myself. He's African, I think Nigeria.
He said "don't get offended, but why do you wear your hair like that, why don't you fix it"
I said "uhh because I like it and I'm tired/don't have time to quote "fix it"" and then I just stormed off.
I've been wearing my hair in a puff, co washing every 2 days. I've worked for 13 days straight 12-15 days per hour day, don't tell me to fix my hair. I wear make up so its not like I'm walking around looking like Bebe's kids.
I actually did get more negative comments about my natural hair when I was living in South Africa and travelled to other countries. Grrr.
Eta: while I was storming off he said "do me a favor, think about fixing it!"
The fuck? Does he think you're there for his ass to look at everyday? Is he somehow unclear that you're working, just like his punk ass? He is more than I can bear, more so because of that "do me a favor" than his stupid perspective on natural hair. How about I do these patients a favor and do my job? I can't even deal.
I'm not going to put this on Africa/Nigeria as a whole (obviously), because there are way too many African women who are natural/braided for me to assume this is the attitude of more than a few idiots.
@wandering I'm not surprised, not that it makes it ok. When I was in Nigeria I had an older relative ask if I was just going to walk around without combing my hair. I was wearing a twist out.
I got complements from younger people, and my cousins asked me for tips so hopefully that means good things for the natural hair movement over there going forward.

I started a social media campaign earlier this year because 2 girls at my old HS were being harassed and twist outs were banned. The ignorance is still very strong across the diaspora.
