I like diving with sharks, but I've only ever been around relatively small reef sharks.
My sister has been cage diving with great whites, though. She said it was awesome.
I've swam with whale aharks which has fairly harmless, or at least not predatory. I cage dove with bull sharks which are more aggressive and that was cool, on my SA trip I plan to do the cage dive with great whites. They are just amazing.
I swam with sharks in the keys. Experience of a life time!

Just curious - where? Was there snorkeling for work this week, the reef we were at only had a nurse shark. I was curious about sharks down there.

People often freak me out with how far they are willing to swim out in the ocean. I was in Australia a few years ago, and tourists were wandering out into some big waves like it was NBD. Between the rip currents and sharks, I am good with waist high water at best.

This is a great question. It was a high school trip and I couldn't tell you where it was at! We were out on a chartered boat though. So far out, not off the shore anywhere.

I wish we had seen some, would have been awesome! We were pretty far out too.
"The odds of getting attacked and killed by a shark are 1 in 3,748,067. In a lifetime, you are more likely to die from fireworks (1 in 340,733), light- ning (1 in 79,746), drowning (1 in 1,134), a car accident (1 in 84), stroke (1 in 24), or heart disease (1 in 5).
DH and I have a condo reserved at the Outer Banks for the week of Labor Day, I asked him today what the cancellation policy is I love going in the water, not being able to is a huge downer!

There have been several Man o Wars that have washed up along the beaches around here. What the hell is going on?
I remember he summer before 9/11 was called the "Summer of the Shark" by different media outlets, but most people agreed it was just a slow news summer and the attacks were being overy-hyped.

I am not sure if there is some phenomena near that area that is create the problem. But in general- we are more likely to be injured driving to the beach than going in the ocean, and the latter is so much more enjoyable.
But I like to visit sharks as a destination, so I am the odd one out.
There a couple of different interesting explanations as to why this is happening in such high numbers. As you point out, this many is sort of unheard of. I grew up swimming in the waters off New Smyrna. Shark central, and there were never this many attacks.
OH FUCKING NEVER MIND, THERE'S EELS AND JELLYFISH AND SNAKES IN THERE.
And flesh eating bacteria.
Yes, this. Plus, bull sharks give no fucks. Those suckers are the nastiest sharks & they are fine with brackish water. They will happily swim miles up rivers.

I've never been to Australia, but between the sharks and the salt water crocs and the box jellyfish, I can safely say I would not be swimming when I finally do make it there.
I was reading tweets that people were back in the water right after the attack. WTF? Also can we talk about the man-o-wars washing up in Jersey? I LOVE swimming in the ocean and even I am a little um, hesistant
I got stung by those things when I was a kid. That shit hurts!!!
Part of the problem is fisherman on the pier throwing scraps into the water to attract fish. Several of the shark bites happened hear the pier, atleast the ones in Oak Island anyway

We have a condo there the week before! My kids love the water, um not sure I could keep them out.
I knew it was you who had posted this before I read your name. Because fucking sharks, man.
Sidenote: I was at my sister's house yesterday and my nieces (5 and 4) told me to close my eyes because they had a surprise for me. The surprise was holding up a book with pictures of sharks. They wanted me to scream in terror (I obliged) LOL

Wait, what? Recently?!
Oh yeah. A big one washed up in Wildwood the other day.

Their teeth always look bloody in pictures. Like they just ripped into some human flesh, then swim away for a photo op.
