I don't know what SW is - but I would caution you to remember that bananapancakes is in Canada, not the US. They are more maternity leave friendly.
Except covering a maternity leave in Canada is a year. So if you get pregnant just before starting, you will likely cover only half of it which would be annoying. Canada isn't lollipop land. And USA isn't hell on earth.
Anyway, OP, if I have learned anything - take care of you. In 3 months, this company could decide they are closing, cutting workers, moving to China, replacing you with their dog. They will not feel any guilt about letting you go or not telling you their plans. No promises and no guarantees. Take care of you. Yes they will be annoyed at first. I get annoyed when my staff want vacation. It means I have to make changes. But I don't resent my employees.
i was all set to like your post until I got to the bolded. ^o) Major side eye to that.
But I agree with the rest. OP: you have to do what you have to do for yourself. Don't feel bad. I agree with @starry, if you need the money and need to wait to tell them, then do it. The fact is that they may let you go since they have to hire someone else later anyway. Who knows, so you just do what you need to. Basically hope for the best but plan for the worst.
So I told my boss today and she was very nice about it. She didn't seem annoyed, but if she was hid it well. The good news is she (before I had told her anything) got the temp position approved for one year. I will be able to work 10/12 months.
I am excited about this position and still don't regret that I didn't tell them sooner. I only told my own mother about 3 weeks ago, and don't think anyone is under any obligation in first trimester.
I did acknowledge that I realize this makes more work for her and can be a challenge to have so many workers on leave, and she said it just comes with the territory.
I do forget that social work differs in many areas compared to other industries, in terms of acceptance of family situations, leaving employment, etc.
Congratulations!!! I'll share my positive story as well. And I'm in the US
I found out I was pregnant shortly after getting laid off in 2008. We were broke and I was desperate for a job. I interviewed for an executive assistant position, they offered me the job when I was ~9 weeks pregnant, but didn't want me to start for 4 weeks, so I was ~13 weeks pregnant. I went into work everyday and was sick as hell, puking, super nauseous, etc. After a month I told my boss that I had a heart condition (which is true) and had an appt scheduled for an EKG (which wasn't true, it was a standard OB pregnancy appt). Then I went into work the next day and said "well golly, the reason my heart has been acting up, is because I'm pregnant! I thought I was infertile (we had been TTC for 2 years with no luck)" and I was terrified of his reaction. He got up and gave me a hug! They gave me 12 weeks off after the birth and then my boss asked if I was interested in coming back part time, I ended up working there part time until my kiddo turned 2.
