I left my car and transmission in California, because it died while we were there. Rented a car to get home.
I have about 80k miles on my car, and it's starting to have a ton of issues. The transmission is gonna cost 3500, and I am not sure the car is worth much more than that.
Single mom teacher here, so I am poor poor, not ML poor. Tell me about your car you love.
I ended up buying a Golf wagon, which is probably more than you want to spend. But I was pretty damn impressed with the Ford Focus (and Fiesta - just thought it was too small). It was a pretty zippy car with a lot of features.
I loved my yaris, which was pretty cheap, all things being relative. A hyundai accent is probably less, and my mom has one and loves hers as much as I loved my yaris. I think kia/hyundai are good bets, and they are good cars for the $ with solid warranties. They wouldn't put that backing behind a car that's going to fall apart.

Also, I'm sorry. That BLOWS.
It sucked, but I did my best not to let it ruin our vacation!

I would stick with Kia, Hyundai, or Mitsubishi for the warranty. I have had nothing but terrible luck with fords (same for my h and parents), so based on that I would stay far away.

When the lease to my Jeep is up I'll be switching to the Mitsubishi Outlander Sport.

I have a 2012 Kia Soul, brand new with lots of extras for $15k. I love my car.
My last car was 2003 Toyota Echo. I freaking loooooved that car. Very basic and brand new was about 12k. I have no idea what they go for now. But I never had a single issue with that car. Over 100k miles on it and no problems. Until H wrecked it. I would have driven that car to the ground.

I would get a Honda. They just GO. None of this new transmission at 80k stuff. We're over 100k and have only done routine maintenance and tires. A door lock broke and it was covered by a recall.
Don't you have a Cube? I feel like I remember that from a what do you drive post. Anyway, it should have a 10yr / 120k mile warranty on the transmission. I'd call the dealer and check if you haven't.

I have a Hyundai Elantra touring and it's been great to me! My sister and mom both have sonatas and are happy. Hyundais are great cars with great warranties
I went through 2 Nissan Sentras. Never any major problems and maintenance is really cheap on them. I think Nissan has an even smaller car out now that's less expensive.

The Versa. I'm not sure what they cost now, but we got a bare bones ( manual transmission, locks, and windows) model in 2012, brand new for 11,000. It gets fantastic gas mileage, too. We've only had to do routine maintenance on it.

My dad has a Hyundai accent that he bought late model used (was less than 2 years old, had less than 20k miles on it) for like 9k, and he loves that car.

We have a Fiesta and love it. Tons of features you may not even know you need. Very reasonably priced and we financed through Ford and got a sweet deal.
We also have a Hyundai Sonata. It is a bit older than the Fiesta and does not have all the bells and whistles, but it is very reliable as well and awesome on gas. The trunk space is HUGE.
Both are smaller cars, but perfect for is with just one child. Plenty of leg room etc. Good luck!

I was wondering about this. I would expect much more from a Nissan than to have the car crap out at 80K.
SS and SDIL just bought a 2008 Corolla with 113K miles on it for $7K. They were looking for that specific car, but we're all expecting it to last another 100K.
I also have to agree with getting a Honda. I wasn't a fan before DH and I got our Element, and I don't know that I'd get another one, but that has nothing to do with reliability. Our Element is a 2006 with 240K miles on it, and it's still going strong. It better last another 50-60K, I just spent $600 on new tires for it.
ETA: We plan to get another Honda some time next year, just because we're so impressed with how this one has kept on going.

This. I think Nissan has been having some issues with their transmissions.
I love my Mazda 3. It's on the cheaper side but it still feels like a fun car to drive- it doesn't scream "mom car."
We just got this, a 2011. It was on a list of most reliable used cars from consumer reports. I think all in it was $12k and it's a cute car with a good amount of room.

Oh no Dowager! I'm sorry that sucks so hard
I have a 2009 Kia rondo. Bought it one year old for $13k so I imagine now it's way less for used. It has third row seat and I've had it five years with no problems. I love it. Visibility is great, lots of storage ( I have three kids two dogs one cat) for trips or food shopping etc. both rows fold down so I've used it to move big furniture that normally wouldn't fit in a car
