So I get back from meeting and there's a VM on my phone from the dermatologist I saw last Friday to have a mole removed. I knew it was getting biopsied or whatever and her message was just all breezy and like, "Hi it's Dr. Soandso, blah blah blah your mole was 'atypical' but I excised 1-2mm of skin around it so I'm sure it's all out. If it comes back, we'll do another conservative excision but for now that's good news!"
Um... atypical? For now? Equals all good news? Did you run out of time on my voicemail to explain what "atypical" even means?
Anyway, I am trying not to be a dramahor but my uncle died of skin cancer in his early 40s and this shit is definitely hereditary in part.
I'm pretty sure that means that it wasn't completely benign but hadn't yet turned cancerous. I know I've had one taken off before that was atypical and they really did tell me not to worry about that one but to keep an eye out for any others that might need to be removed. Also, if that one does come back it's no good and you need to go back.
I would be mad that this was left in a VM. But maybe not, because I hate that waiting time while you play phone tag. But yes, I would, because who tells you something like that and doesn't give you the opportunity to ask questions!
For real, if it was bad, she never would have left you that VM. She would have told you to call her and given you no info whatsoever.

I've had over 25 removed (gross, I know. Got to love that Scandinavian skin). I've had several atypical and several basal cell cancer. From what she said, it's all good. It doesn't take much to get it all when it's atypical. Just make sure you follow up in the next 6 months or so. Good luck!!

Thanks, everyone. My uncle who died and I are of also of Scandinavian origin. Yes, we are sexy, sturdy, have great hair, and can sing awesome pop music, but these temperate latitudes take a hefty toll on our fair skin.
Anyway, thank goodness I have you people to keep me sane.
