I will be sure to pass this on to a HS friend of mine who was raped by a cop and became pregnant. She had the strength to carry the baby to full term and give him to a wonderful adoptive family. Was Akin ever a judge in StL, because at the hearing to make the adoption final, the judge spent the whole time telling her how irresponsible she was to let herself get raped and pregnant. How she was not a responsible adult....she was 15. She knew in terms of caring for a child that she wasn't ready and that is why she chose adoption.
That could've been me at 14, but for "luck" (if you can even use that word in association with rape).
Gah, what a fucking asshole. I've been reading for the past 5 minutes about the only 3rd party choice - Jonathan Dine. While I love me some Libertarian, can I vote for a U.S. senator who uses "r" for "are"? www.facebook.com/dine2010

Apparently these asshats have never heard of the Vikings, or other cultures that raped their conquests in order to spread their lineage. Oh wait, I bet he's too dumb to study history. My bad.
I don't think that joint statement is Ryan changing his stance. Ryan couldn't veto a bill if he wanted and has to defer to Romney on this for the official administration stance.
In a phone interview this morning, Mitt Romney told National Review Online that Representative Todd Akin’s recent comment on rape is “inexcusable.”
“Congressman’s Akin comments on rape are insulting, inexcusable, and, frankly, wrong,” Romney said. “Like millions of other Americans, we found them to be offensive.”
Akin, the Republican Senate nominee from Missouri, controversially claimed on Sunday that a woman’s body can block an unwanted pregnancy.
“If it’s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut the whole thing down,” Akin said in an interview with KTVI-TV.
“I have an entirely different view,” Romney said. “What he said is entirely without merit and he should correct it.”

God, of course Akin couldn't have pulled this shit a few weeks ago during the tight primary when there were 7 other choices besides McCaskill. :@ :@ Can we have a do-over?
I really don't even care that much what Romney and Ryan say about this. I care that the word gets out and Missourians don't vote for this guy. This is just indefensible.
I even understand people who don't believe abortion should be an option in cases of rape. If you view abortion as killing an innocent life, then it's still an innocent life even if the conception was the product of rape. (In fact, I think there is a reasonable argument that bans on abortion that make exceptions for rape are more about slut-shaming than saving children, but that's another discussion for another day.) BUT if you're going to oppose abortion even in cases of rape, you still need to arrive at your position using, oh, I don't know, ACTUAL FACTS. Not to mention all the offensiveness contained in the phrase "legitimate rape."

This is disgusting enough at face value, but it's even more vile because by saying this he's implying that those women who have pregnancies resulting from rape must have been faking those rapes. Because, you know, their natural defense mechanism or whatever bullshit would have kicked in and saved them. They obviously couldn't have been legitimately raped. :@

Do you think if the mysterious female biological defense mechanism fails and you get pregnant from an assault, they declare you an Unwoman and send you to the Colonies?

I can't let go of this. I want him off the Science and Tehnology Comm unless he provides the name of one licenced medical doctor who holds the position he claims. Then I want that doctor stripped of his license, and Akin stripped of his committee seat.

The canard had been floating around the right long before Willke wrote his piece. In 1995, 71-year-old North Carolina state Rep. Henry Aldridge gained national notoriety after telling the N.C. House Appropriations Committee, "The facts show that people who are raped -- who are truly raped -- the juices don't flow, the body functions don't work and they don't get pregnant. Medical authorities agree that this is a rarity, if ever."
So minors who are manipulated into statutory rape, without physical force, are not legitimate rape, either.
And all the raped 10 year old girls in the Congo walking around with fistulae from giving birth so young, unable to leave hospital grounds because feces literally falls out of them all day -- they were just sluts because you can't get pregnant if you're not "into it."
cattledogkisses, if you read the Atlantic article I just posted, I *think* what these idiots are saying is that one is less likely to become pregnant by "forcible" rape, as opposed to statutory rape. Which is a baseless claim, and even if it WERE true, are they saying they are unconcerned about adult men impregnating little girls, as long as they didn't beat the crap out of them first?

I think this goes beyond the distinction of statutory rape vs rape.
I think what they are saying is if you get knocked up from pregnancy you weren't really raped.

While the distinction hardly matters, it's all completely disgusting and inaccurate, I'm referring to this bullcrap from Physicians for Life, which is where I assume Akin is getting his info: "Assault Rape Pregnancies Are Rare www.physiciansforlife.org/content/view/492/26/ :@

Yup. What they're really saying is that you were into it at the time, and tried to claim it was rape later. I hope there aren't too many people out there who believe this, but I'm sure my faith in humanity is misplaced.

Oh, it's definitely a common thought, that rape is just a claim from women who regret it the next day.
