silly question but if a list says "4 boxes of expo markers" how many would that be, exactly? i can get a dozen on amazon for $9. B&J each need 4 boxes and G needs 1.

Hmm. I don't think of them as boxes. A pack usually has 4 markers in them, red, blue, black and green.
I just spent $80 on DD2's list. That did not include the backpack, pencils, locker shelf, optional paperback novels, and magnetic locker pen cup. Good God.
Did you know you can get a locker chandelier? And a locker rug?
I think most lists aren't updated very often, which is why you get requests for things that don't exist- like the flip top cigar box pencil box DD2 was supposed to have in third grade. :/
That and the one year that we did get to make a list, I had to make it off a particular school supply website. We tried to crosscheck as much as possible but their packages/quantities didn't match up to what was available in store. It was absolutely maddening.
ETA: I bought glue sticks by the gross when I was teaching. The kids went through pencils like WHOA though very few brought Ticonderoga. Cheap pencils with the cheap erasers that just smear everything around suck. I pretty much bought all of the kids supplies except pencils and made them community supplies. I literally provided everything other than pencils and backpacks, down to the composition notebook I wanted and adult size scissors. It was just so much easier than the supplies they brought in since by 5th grade, half of them didn't bring most of the list anyway.

i did see the rug somewhere (maybe target?) but wtf on a chandelier?

Target has had both in years past. I know people who buy the chandeliers for their doll houses. I think PB Teen also has the chandeliers and Amazon probably does too.
I spent $43 total, but based upon past experience we will get an entirely different list once we actually start school.
Our list this year had the statement "this is the final supply list. This year, teachers will not be sending home additional supply lists for individual classrooms."
I'll believe it when I see it but the list was more involved than years past.

LUCKYYYYYYY
I think it was DD's second grade class that had an entirely different list on day one. I was so very WTF.

That happened in k or 1st. I can't remember. And I was like "wait wtf is all this other shit you had me buy??!?" Lol.

i would be piiiiiiiised. especially since they (ok, i) can't keep from opening ALL THE THINGS and getting them all ready.
we have a general list and then the "your specific teacher may ask for additional supplies" but since we don't find out who they have for another 2 weeks i can't finish it all.
ok, i lied. i do know who the boys have (holla special placement!!!) but i have no idea who G has yet.

That was indeed the year we learned to leave everything packaged up until school started. I'm all about ripping open supplies and getting organized so I know the pain of forbearance, but once bitten and all that jazz.
