Heh, protozoa, as part of a program I worked on once, we had to go to the Russian bath house with the group. Let me tell you, there was literally nowhere safe to look. Nowhere! It remains one of the worst experiences of my life.
I would refuse to go. Sick baby, dead car battery, anything I could come up with. Our department always does these stupid team building days as well, and they're always lame. Unless there's alcohol involved. One year, we had to go to the F-1 track, but they wouldn't open the bar until everyone was done driving. So the rest of us got to stand around sucking on exhaust and cursing them out under our breaths while totally sober.
Team activities always stress me out as a manager. I try to plan things the staff like but they always end up complaining. Usually I try to make them vote or plan themselves. And if we don't do anything they complain about that too.
While I agree water parks especially and working out are embarrassing and a bad idea, try to give your managers a break. Team builders are pretty much a no-win situation.

So I suggested to my boss that perhaps there would be some team members who were less than comfortable with the suggested outing - and suggested that maybe instead we plan an afternoon at the racetrack (we've done it before with a previous team, it's always fun even if you don't bet)... she replied that she wanted to get the team to do something physical...

I don't know, I don't think the idea sounds that bad. We have a zumba class I do at my office once a week and I love it. Of course it is with coworkers but we get to leave work a little early for it and its fun.
