Ditto everyone else. If you're salaried it's likely legal (if you're exempt). I'm lucky that my salaried job expects just over 40 hours/week, but at my husband's job (restaurant manager) they are expected to work 55 hours/week and it's usually more than that. Unfortunately that's pretty normal for the restaurant business.
H is salaried and works way more than 40 hours a week. He is compensated some days with bonuses depending on whether he is in the office or out in the field.
This was pretty typical at my last FT job. We were expected to come in on Saturdays and work late nights when contracts were wrapping up/major deadlines were approaching. We were usually compensated with a flex day to take off once the project wrapped up. It wasn't a even trade but it was nice to get a Friday off after putting in some extra time.
This company was well-known for these expectations and paid substantially better than their competitors. So, you sort of knew what you were getting when you worked there.

I had a salaried nursing job once (home hospice). We regularly worked over. No compensation. They ended up changing everyone over to hourly about 6 months after I started.
