We live in upstate NY (or westen NY, I'm never sure what to call it because I know some peeps call Westchester "upstate" lol). We live in a suburb of Rochester. It took me a loooong time, like ten years, but I think I am finally coming to love it. It has a lot going for it, especially if you want to own a house and raise a family.
It it helps to make sure you get the right outerwear for winters. I know it sounds silly and obvious but it look me years to break down and buy a full length down coat and the right boots. Made a big difference of course, duh. Lol
Maine, Vermont, Rhode Island.....Upstate New York. I want to live in an area with seasons. I will confess that I live in California where it never snows. So I know after a real winter in New England, I might change my mind. I would love to live in an area that looks like this though....
Woodstock, Vermont
Back in the 1970's my mom was a camp counselor for The Fresh Air Fund which was about 65 miles north of NYC and she talked so highly of the beautiful colors in the Fall. I would love to visit one day.
We also stayed with my husband's grandmother who live in Chapel Hill, NC. I loved how green it was, but I was warned that the summer's are horrible.
I have been to San Diego several times. My dad grew up in Rancho Santa Fe so we used to visit my grandparents a lot. The weather is gorgeous but it's pretty crowded.

NorCal is pretty awesome. But alas, definitely not L/MCOL. I'm hoping Austin is our perfect place. We also considered Portland, OR. My husband is from a suburb of Philadelphia and we still entertain that idea. But it's too far from my family for right now.

Every time we visit my parents we drive through Catoctin Mountain Park in Maryland and I tell DH I want to build a treehouse and live there. I think it would be perfect for you. Well, just outside the park because you can't live in the park unless you're the president (it's where Camp David is).
