I hate, hate MLM. I think on my first day back to work next year after 12yrs of being a SAHM...my status will be something like: I was a SAHM for 12 yrs and survived without being any part of any pyramid scheme. I think that may top keeping my kids alive.
I have never been FB feed spammed or messaged to buy MLM products or even to join one so I too can live the hashtag momdream or mompreneur or allformykids or whatever. Watch, I probably jut jinxed myself.
A friend of mine from junior league sells R&F and must be up for a promotion because she is posting about it all the time now. Parties, sending emails, she even has a friend who doesn't sell it post about it for her. It's very odd. I don't understand why she does it because I'm fairly certain she doesn't need the money.
... but then one of our Canadians said that they joined a kids book-related MLM (?) and they paid for sales. Maybe? Did I make this up?
Me. Yes I have now signed up and it's 22% commission on sales. If you sign people up you only get 2% override on their sales so I'm not really seeing the incentive.
Anyway I've decided to only do it as a fundraiser for sick kids hospital for a couple of months so if any Canadians do plan to buy those books anyway for Christmas gifts or what have you, please buy from me and my commission will go to Sick kids. I decided to do that as it's the one year anniversary of my daughter being diagnosed w hip dysphasia plus I'm really not into mlms but I love usborne books. I'll be buying them as gifts myself and sending the commission to SK. The books are the same price as they are at Indigo. The free books I got for joining will go to my hs special needs classroom. bananapancakes @ Vicmo rugbywife @hannymaren
pugz you should watch out because at least on Canada, you have to have £200 in sales in your first 12 weeks otherwise you have to pay for the starter kit in full (£200)

Do you have to have $XXX/month in sales in order to earn a commission? Do you get a commission on every sale, or just the sales above quota?
patbutcher they were running a "no strings" promotion when I signed up! I will only get my ecommerce site for a certain amount of time (maybe 6 months) unless I have sales.

No. You get the commission on every sale and no quota other than the one I mentioned to pugz for the first 3 months. And even that isn't bad. I'm happy to spend that £200 on the books myself as gifts and for my hs school. After that no quota. Also, my supervisor or whatever she is has never contacted me. I thought she would be pushy but I actually contacted her and she ran through how to login to the website etc and that was it. Haven't heard from her in two weeks.
I don't think Usborne is a "real" mlm like r & f etc.
I had a college casual friend who sold Mary Kay. She contacted me again like probably 3-5 years after graduation, and was all, "Let's be friends! Want to get lunch? I miss you, girl! Let's have a Mary Kay party!" Like, it was sociopath level friendship. I wasn't as wise to the MLM scheme, and it was a shitty time in my life when I was unemployed and had a terminally ill cat, and I thought, "Oh sure, I could use another friend! Why not!?" It took me probably too long to realize it was all to sell Mary Kay and have a party in my apartment. I realize this is super naive, but I was actually really sad about it. It didn't seem that off to want to reconnect, but it really was. Now she's no longer selling it and has nothing to do with me. I never told her off, but we aren't like besties or anything. I just told her I couldn't host for whatever reason.
Ugh. What an awful way to lure women into thinking they're going to get some sort of financial independence, when probably some D-bag at the top gets it all.
Your story reminded me of how naive I was when I graduated college. About 2 years after graduating I was getting married and I "won" a free makeup party at a bridal show. I was so excited that I actually won something and thought I was about to get a bunch of free makeup. I made all of my bridesmaids attend this party. Of course it was Mary Kay and we were all guilt tripped into being sellers at this party. I was so embarrassed. And then 1 of my bridesmaids actually signed up and lost money she didn't have trying to keep up with the minimum requirements. Ugh.
I have a friend who I (finally figured out despite her obscure posts) does Isa.ge.nix. Every few months I get a giant message blast from her to all her FB friends about wellness, strength, energizing youthf.ulness, etc, just come to her place on X date to learn more. She doesn't post too much for random statuses, but she's constantly uploading profile pictures of her at the gym, in bikinis, at fitness competitions.... What's annoying is she makes it seem like she was overweight before starting this but I don't think she's ever weighed more than 110lbs soaking wet. The only thing that's different is she's been working out. I'm also just now realizing that she was recruited shortly after her second kid was born so clearly going after new moms is a common strategy.
I actually like the beach body workouts (did p90, p90x and plan to again when I have the time), and some other products like pampered chef, fantasia, and epicure, but I hate the "scheme" of recruiting underlings.
Job shaming AND fat shaming! Safe to assume that these mlms include a copy of "How to Win Friends and Influcence People" in their onboarding materials, no?
I just looked up Young Living oils because I have seen so many people claiming they earn thousands per month. The average annual income is $312. $26 per month.
I don't mind a lot of MLM products. 31 bags are nice, and I am a sucker for Tastefully simple and Pampered Chef. But in general, the people on my FB who sell those are not pushers about it. They may post once in a great while saying "Remember guys, I'm a PC consultant, if anyone needs anything let know" and that's it.
It's Beachbody and Jamberry that really get the brunt of my anger haha .
I feel like the better the product, the less they harass. I love scentsy and I have a hard time finding a rep because hey never post anything. On the other hand, the mascara and r&f are everywhere.

With the one I signed up with, I fail to see how it could be a viable income. I think my supervisor woman makes about 50K from what I can deduce from the company website and her sales etc. she has been with the company for 15 years.
That said, I went to an Ar.bonne thing last weekend and we all got forced into buying crap. I bought a bloody deodorant for £19 just because it was the cheapest thing they had!
Another MLM memory I have is from when I was 17 and my mom took my sister and I on a cross country road trip. We ended up staying with a good friend of my mom's in Canmore (expensive town in the Rockies) that she hadn't seen in a decade. It didn't take long for her and her husband to turn the conversation into how they made a fortune from selling Juice Plus (and they did, he actually quit his exec job to help his wife when she was so successful) and what an amazing health product it is yadda yadda. My poor single mom bought it hook line and sinker, became a (failed) seller but still buys it and tries to push the stuff on me. I'm still mad at them for taking advantage of my mom.

I went to one of their things a couple months ago and managed to leave the party without buying anything, but got a message from the rep a week or so later telling me that as a "birthday gift" if I ordered something it'd be 30% off. So I got some makeup primer because the sample I'd gotten at the party didn't suck, but I don't plan on buying more when this stuff runs out.
The ONLY person I know involved with and MLM that actually makes good money, supposedly, is with Ar.bonne.
I think all my other friends do their shit to get stuff for themselves at a discount (like buy it for themselves).
Yeah but have you seen the prices of that stuff? There were only three of us at the party- I spent £50 on two deodorants and the other girls spent over £200 each on protein powder that is £79 for something that costs £25 at Walmart.
Also- I had to pay £7 shipping (we all did) even though it was all getting sent to the hosts house. They still charge each person £7. RAGE

All I know is that they have parties where they all dress in white and if they make enough money they get a white BMW or something. #notmything

The girl told us she has been doing it three months and is on track to get a Mercedes next April. She is 24. Honestly, at those prices, I believe it. That's why I think the books I'm doing is not really an MLM. The prices are the same as indigo so at least they are not ripping people off. Plus I have no promise of a Mercedes or Beemer. Lol
I have a friend that is deep into the whole Beach.body thing and it's just ridiculous. Every day she is posting a selfie with her shake or a video where she is working out to the latest Shaun T video with a hashtag like #idontsweatisparkle. No, No, No. She and her husband both have good jobs so it's odd to me that she's all in with this.
Another friend hosted a Lu.la.roe party a couple months ago and I actually got some really cute things that seem to be holding up after a few wears. I went for the free wine/food, but I was actually really surprised at the quality of the clothes.
I've only gotten this far. But not necessarily. It's not true, as far as I've seen in Canada. Instead it just draws in an even more obnoxious breed of seller who 'can't imagine someone else raising their children' after their paid year of maternity leave. Then they post on my FB local all day.
This is the second time you have posted something like this here and it keeps rubbing me the wrong way.
FWIW, every single person I know who is involved in an MLM (and when I do a count on FB it's kind of interesting how many there are) is employed in some other job.
My experience is similar to rx Beth. A lot of moms who want to stay home. So I think her point about 1 year maternity leave not making a difference for some people is true.

I don't know about AB but with MK you earn your car based on how many people you have under you and how much your team is buying from corporate. If you don't keep up with the financial quota, they stop sending you the check for your car payment so you're on the hook for it. MK doesn't care if you sell, they want you to order stock from corporate and that's how your up line is paid. So they convince their consultants that they need to have products on hand and they keep changing the packaging to force people to buy more product for their business. A person can never get a Cadillac without recruiting a ton of people and making sure those recruits are recruiting and ordering stock.

I have so many people who belong to the one that starts with N, the anit age cream. Its so awful. They are all SAHM whose lives have changed once they started selling it. At least 2 have gotten a lexus from it. But, if they don't meet sales, don't they have to pay for the lexus. Also, don't they get screwed come tax time if they don't set money aside properly?

I am so lucky there's not a ton of that in my FB feed. I have one friend who recently started selling 31 and said she was going to create a separate group for people who are interested, but now she keeps sharing everything from it on her main page. Way to defeat the purpose! Another friend sells the nail ones, but she actually DID create a separate group and I haven't seen a single thing about it in the 6 months or so since. You go, Glen Coco!
And a million years ago, right after I graduated from college, my friend (who was engaged and had a small baby at the time) got really into tupperware for some reason. And because I was bored and no one else was around, I went with her to freaking tupperware bingo one night, and it was terrifying. These women were REALLY invested in winning some tupperware. I still tell her she owes me for that, and it's been almost 20 years, ha.
I am delighted (especially after @brie's post) to say I have never encountered beach body IRL. What does it entail? Shakes? Workouts? Paying someone to fat shame you?
IDK. You have to call someone to talk about it. They can't tell you in writing due to FCC guidelines. lol
This explains why a H.S. friend is always hosting a conference call about her MLM product. I always thought that was so odd in 2015. Like you can't post something to your FB page? People have to call you to have how AHMAZING your 'product' is? So odd!
The more you know. She sells one of those "magic beans" type of things. "Take this everyday! It has all the nutrients you need!! Just add in a ridiculously healthy and normal eating regimen along with exercise as well!!" She posted a pic of her 'clients' one time. It was like a poster board of an excel file. People's names, what they bought, how often... In a very pyramid-esque shape.
One of my fellow PTA moms has the car. She also spends most of her Sunday evenings on conference calls. Her H has a middle of the road job and they live in a house worth about 2 mill.
Dying to know how many people are in her downline. I was one gin and tonic away from asking her last Sunday at our board meeting.

One of my high school friends from the UK has just started selling Juice Plus. I couldn't work out what is was for ages as they really don't mention the actual name on Facebook. I had never heard of it before.

It essentially is just pulverized fruit and vegetables in capsules. So instead of getting all the waste (?) of eating fresh fruit and veggies, load up on 2 capsules a day instead... I mean, looking at the ingredients its a decent idea for a vitamin and I'm not opposed to taking them if mom hands me a couple, but no, Mom, I'm not supporting your jerk friend by buying this stuff.
