I just can't get past this. The fear on there faces. That poor baby's cry. Him holding onto his wife WITH HIS FUCKING TEETH.
We have lost our way if this is how we treat people fleeing death and destruction.
so much this! These people have been through enough, just let them cross into the countries that can take them. I don't understand Hungary's end game here. I'm sure it's more nuanced than I know but I'm enraged watching that video.
2. European countries are going to all need to absorb refugees and stop whining. It just is, that's it, everyone is going to have to give something up to make way to help others.
3. flameful opinion(?) The U.S. has done more than a little bit in destabilizing the region and needs to do more, too. "Well, it's across the ocean, so not my problem" is a no when there was no problem getting over the ocean to invade somewhere.

I'm done being nuanced and giving people the benefit of the doubt. They've been leaning neo-Nazi for years and I've been sideeyeing their being in the EU. If it looks like a nationalistic, White supremacist, and acts like a nationalistic, White supremacist than it is.

That is hard. I agree with you that the US has accountability here. However, Current administration didn't do the biggest damage in destabilizing the region. And yet can you imagine if the US starting taking in droves of people from the region? Could make the democratic party enemy #1. Unless it's the Christians driven out of Iraq and neighboring countries, that is. It's back to a lose-lose proposition. It is heartbreaking.

I haven't kept up with any of this. School me. What's up with white supremacy in Hungary?
I'm frustrated and I know things are complicated but we live in a global society and when ish gets real somewhere, everyone should feel a little pain because usually more than a couple people had a hand in how something got that way.
I personally sit around all the time feeling sorry for people's plights, and then doing nothing, and then clicking on a story about a Kardashian wearing a bikini. Maybe what should happen is that it should affect my life somehow in some way. Maybe that would make people see how we are all interrelated and be more engaged im what our governments are, and are not doing.

It's morning here and I have to get my kids to school but I've been seeing docs and reading articles for years about Hungary's xenophobia. It's one of the reasons refugees are adamant about not staying there, I would assume.
And it's probably reactionary, but I just watched a documentary about how badly the U.K. and France were in messing up the borders in the region and then bounced when it got hard. Well, maybe they weren't directly at fault for this current crisis, but guess what? A bill always becomes due somehow. So help out.
I don't think the Europeans are acting any differently than the rest of the world. Read the comments from the NZ and Australian Prime Ministers. Look at how Americans talk about those coming from South and Central America. The truth is to those of us comfortable in our bubbles don't want the inconvience of these refugees. It's not an EU problem it's a global problem
This is a good Article. I can't see the US stepping up sadly. Then we also shold address why people are leaving. I mean it is just going to continue getting we worse there and I feel like even if we magically stopped the fighting there, the county is such a mess infa structure wise it be hard for people to live there

Please know my frustration isn't directed at you, so if I sound snippy, i don't mean it to be personal.
The current administration may not have been directly involved but our country has a hand in these things and we live in a democracy and we are all on watch so we all take responsibility for what America does. Even if we did it years ago, that's what I meant with bills always become due.
The U.S. has taken in like 2,000 people or something. We have some responsibility. We have to do something, I don't know what, but something, everyone does. The West can't keep reaping the benefits of destabilizing places and making promises and drawing borders that suit us, and exploiting people and resources (talking generalities, not just this crisis. And talking the West, and not just the U.S.), and then when people in said countries need something from us then turn around and say, "Welp, we're too far/can't afford it/not politically feasible, etc..." It's hard, but *shrug* gotta figure something out.
A 13-year old Syrian boy told reporters earlier this week :"helps us end the war in Syria and we will not have to flee our country."
This is what needs to be done (after helping the refugees of course).
Hungary has become a racist country since its last elections. They built a wall on the border with Serbia to stop refugees and immigrants passing through. They have no place in the EU anymore. The countries who accepted the most refugees in 2014 are: Sweden, Malta and Cyprus. France accepted the least - and they claim to have a socialist president. I truly hope my own country (Belgium) cleans up its act. There are refugee camps everywhere now in and outside Brussels.

I was under the impression people were just trying to pass through Hungary to get to other places. I don't understand why they are being dicks. Also we in the US may display asshole type behavior, but we aren't putting up fences to try to prevent people from transiting through our country. I would also hope there are plans for us to take people in as well.
I read this in the Vox article and I just had to shake my head because, as usual, the US does little to aid people if $$ isn't involved. APPARENTLY, SAVING CHILDREN FROM DROWNING AT SEA VIOLATES OBAMA'S "DON'T DO STUPID SHIT" FOREIGN POLICY DOCTRINE
(it is caps because it is a pull from the article. sorry about that)

I was going to bring this up. The U.S. certainly has some ownership with the current situation, but it was powder keg and a recipe for disaster from the beginning. Colonialism and the way they divvied up land and then peaced out with fucked up borders set the whole region up for failure. I once read an article about how the borders were drawn and the UK and France leaving...it was truly mind boggling.
What I think depresses me most about this type of situation is that the world's track record when they do step in is not good. So I feel depressed and angry that nothing is being done, but I also feel depressed and hesitant about the other countries stepping in because it's not necessarily going to make things better. I mean taking refugees is necessary but I mean doing something beyond that in the region to make things better - that is unlikely to do anything but fuck it up more.

I once had a Palestinian professor who said "if you want to know why the Middle East is the disaster that it is now, the answer is three words: Sykes Picot Agreement."

ha! I had a professor say basically the same thing. This professor was actually from the Middle East, and his lectures on Israel/Palestine were also fascinating. At the time there were so many details that I didn't even know.

I didn't read that article, but the US is the single largest donor of humanitarian aid for the Syria crisis--total expenditures to date are more than $4.1 billion.
Per the article, it is $500 million. Is the 4.1 for the war as well?
