My co-workers started talking politics. I was working with three other people whom I've known a long time and really respect. We were talking about work, vacations, etc. and then someone said, "what do you think of Trump?' and it all went down hill. He's fabulous for saying what he really thinks and bringing upall the hard issues that everyone's been ignoring. Two of these people are immigrants and they hate illegal immigrants because "they did it the right way, why can't others?" And of course abotion is evil "it's a little person _ I saw the video." I started feeling physically nauseous. I mean we work in social services, FFS. And that is why politics and work don't mix.
I experience this weekly at my org, where the majority of my CWs can regurgitate the latest Rachel Maddow talking points with gusto. I try to wait for tactful opportunities to provide alternate points of view, but usually I just use non-work avenues to debate and discuss.
It's tough when any office swings as a whole one way or the other.

That's the worst. In the 2004 election cycle, I was working in an office with a whole bunch of very liberal Democrats (I am a moderate - social liberal, fiscal conservative) and the day after the Republican convention, I kid you not, the entire office conversation centered on how (Eta: physically) ugly Republicans are. I was just speechless.
I work in Human Services (benefits issuance at that!) And my mind was blown when I found out some of my coworkers very conservative stances. How can you rationalize issuing state and federal programs to the needy when you side with a party who WANTS TO TAKE THEM AWAY?! Listening to them talk hurts my head.
My mom works in children's social services and is a very low-taxes, hands-off government sort of libertarian. My dad works closely with OSHA regulations and is essentially a conservative Republican. Not really sure how either can reconcile those things, but whatever.
