It's real. I went to school with them. I agree with a lot of your thoughts, and was a bit put off by the smiling as well, but if this is a way for her to cope, then so be it. My heart breaks for them.

The smiling next to him feels weird to me, but people do what they do sometimes and it doesn't always make sense. I know I'm one of those people.
My mom died of an overdose very unexpectedly. Actually, some parts of this story are so familiar. She was able to quit, but then went back after being clean for a bit and took the amount her body was previously used to, possibly more due to the severe memory loss she had.
But anyway, the day before her funeral a gift I had ordered arrived. It just so happened that it was a life sized cut out of the Emmett character from the Twilight movies (long story lol) and I thought it should be with her. So next to the flower arrangement, we had a six foot cut out of a creepy weird looking vampire. I have pictures of me and my friend grinning next to it. The casket isn't in the pictures and quite honestly even in my memory there is just a big black hole where the casket was, but there it is with a totally inappropriate picture at a funeral.
I try not to judge, but just accept that people each have their own weirdness.
And having an over sharer for a grandmother who is very vocal in her grief, I don't find making it public strange.
Drug abuse by "normal" (not a homeless bum or lowlife or whatever) people needs to be spoken about.
