(taking this out of the other thread because it's Friday and I need to understand)
There is a whole thread of comments about washcloth use on that Deadspin post with a link to ANOTHER discussion about it. I don't understand how you are washing your cooch and your asscrack out good with just ...your hand? I feel like we have discussed this here before and I don't remember the responses. Please spend some time reading the washcloth comments on that post!
I agree wholeheartedly. In fact, if I'm a guest somewhere and there's no washcloth, I will use the corner of my towel before my hand.

Wait. You people are using a loofah on your labia?! Are you kidding? How is that not the ultimate in chafing? I use a loofah on my body. I use my hand on all of my delicate areas, and that includes my ass and cooch. I feel like a washcloth wouldn't get into my butt crack easily, and it would be too rough on my cooch. I use baby wipes after I poo, so I don't think my ass is usually THAT dirty when I get into the shower to begin with.

I'm a no washcloth user (and white, obviously). I mean, nobody in my family did growing up and so we don't now. Washcloths are for washing your face in the sink or washing out bits when you're not showering...or cleaning the counter (different ones of course).
I don't know why either - I think it's ever weirder that growing up we had shampoo and conditioner in the shower - never soap. It wasn't until I started using body wash to smell good in high school that I ever put soap and not shampoo on my body to wash. Now our family uses soap, but in our hands on our bodies, not a washcloth.
ETA: Thanks to a post about this about 5 years ago here or the other place, I now make sure guests have a washcloth in their towels when visiting, but we still don't use them.
Well I haven't gotten any complaints that I'm smelly, and I have a lot of people up in my business lately.
I first took this that you were sleeping around. I don't think a medical professional would tell you if you were stinky though....would they? Or are you sleeping around?
I don't use washcloths on my bits. If soap and hot water and rubbing is enough to clean my hands after I use the bathroom, then I think it's enough for my delicate undercarriage. But I'm also only two baby steps away from a patchouli scented hippie when it comes to my bathing habits...so I am not qualified to carry this torch.
Oh FWIW, I do own washcloths and always make sure they are provided to guests. I just don't use them in the shower myself unless I'm legit grimy and need to SCRUB.

I'm not telling. ::whistles::
But you're right, a medical professional wouldn't tell you, but you can also gauge people's reactions.

Mixed chick wash cloth user. Serious question for loofah and poof users. What's the last thing you wash in the shower and the first thing you wash the next time? Cause all I think about is left over butt cooties all over my face if I'm re-using a poof or loofah over and over again.

I'd like to think that I think I keep a pretty stone cold poker face as I smell stinky vayjayjay. Even when we do the whiff test when the patient isn't around, still stone cold!
I use a loofah. Of course you can't get clean with just your hand. Is someone arguing that you can?
There have been plenty of mosts on multiple nest/gbcn boards in regards to (typically white) people only using their hands for cleaning their body on a daily basis.
White lady pouf user here. I've never had an issue with chafing. And yes, I know poufs are bad dermatologically speaking but I do sanitize mine weekly, make sure it's dried thoroughly and get a new one monthly.
And because I'm sure that this will come up at some point, I have a mirena and don't get my period, so cleaning it during is not an issue I deal with.
I didn't realize washcloths were a black people thing until college with white roommates and then until being on the nest.
Maybe I get dirtier than others, but I've spent time in developing countries taking bucket baths where I didn't bring a washcloth or loofah and the minute I get home to the gloriousness of hot water and a washcloth I scrub off layers of dirt. Clearly my hands don't do a good enough job of getting off the dirt.

Ditto. It actually never occurred to me that my guests are cleaning their asses with my washcloths.

I am assuming, perhaps incorrectly, that when someone says they are using a loofah down there, they mean one of those soft body pouf things, not an actual loofah. Because, yea, ouch.
I'm with wawa... so just soap with my hands is good enough for my hands, which are the most exposed part of my body, but not good enough for my privates? Does a medical person want to convince me why this is?
This is eye opening, I thought everyone used wash cloths/pouf or something of that variety.
I grew up using them. I had two, one for the shower and another at the sink to wash my face.
Now, I use a pouf in the shower and a face loofah thingie at the sink. I keep different "sets" of wash cloths too.
-White ones from the dollar store for cleaning (easily bleach-able). -Blue ones, matches my towel set, given to guests when they visit. -Crocheted ones from my Mom that I use more as decorative.
Also this. I pressure wash. Handheld showerheads are a must have in my life. I've had one in every bathroom since I moved out of the dorms in college.
And seriously - are ya'll leaving chunks behind when you wipe? Why are you so caught up on having a dirty asscrack? I shit. I wipe until the TP comes back clean. It's not like there are smears of shit just hanging out waiting till my next shower. Just invisible eww which again, is no different than my hands which have touched god knows what and come clean just fine with soap and hot water.
If anybody is curious I do use a washcloth to clean my little people. They are some grimy little humans though and things get all...everywhere in diapers.

Team washcloth. We almost came back from England because we couldn't find washcloths anywhere. We finally found some marketed as dusting cloths but we didn't care. Hotels never had them, though. No wonder everyone on the Tube smelled so bad.

There is no clinical reason to scrub with a washcloth or loofah and I don't think anyone is saying that people who don't use those things are going to get a disease...
However, I wash my hands several times a day so they are definitely a lot more clean than my armpits and under my boobs for example, where sweat and dead skin cells accumulate over time. My body needs some exfoliation with a washcloth or loofah to remove those things that my hands don't need since my hands are washed several times per day, don't accumulate sweat and dead skin cells the same way the rest of my body do and are wiped regularly with a paper towel.
Everyone's body is different though, but for me, just using my hands to wash doesn't remove dirt in the same way as a washcloth which I've discovered on multiple occasions when I had no access to a washcloth for days/weeks.
