And killing the population actually leaves the ones behind with the ability to spawn larger litters because the environment was used to supporting more. spay and neuter is the only way to prevent the issue.

Since "most people you know" trap and kill them I thought you would know how that was happening.  Shot in their trap? Poisoned?  Worse?

If I knew of anyone (let alone most people I know) trapping and killing cats, I'd be reporting them to the police.
