We just bought a new house and with it, we want a new couch. The living room is small-ish so we're trying to figure out the best way to maximize seating. We have a couch style picked out, but need to decide if we want a sectional or a couch and two chairs.
I realize this is mostly personal preference, but if you have a sectional, do you like it? Or would you choose more re-arrangeable furniture next time?

I have a sectional and it's very comfortable but at times I regret not getting a sofa. I like to rearrange a lot and not having that flexibility is driving me insane.
I also think sectionals are trickier to decorate around. They are just so massive! I feel like mine needs a million throw pillows.
We have a small living room and a sectional worked much better for the space. It is where we watch TV and we both like to lie down on the sofa when watching so a sectional it is.
Forgive the unorganized, still unpacking mess of a house. This is from the hallway with our current furniture it in.
Thank you to everyone that's weighed in so far - I do think we might miss the flexibility of rearranging, like someone mentioned, but I also worry that with a sofa and a couple of chairs and end tables, the space will look packed.

I agree with PP about it all depending on the space. In your space, I think either would work, I'd probably go with a sectional. Since we bought out new couch, love seat and chair nearly five years ago, we haven't rearranged once...
I prefer a couch, but an arrangeable sectional could give you the flexibility of still changing things up while keeping the sectional aesthetic. My parents have a sectional/lounge combo that they can sort of take apart and reassemble how they wish.
Instead of a sectional we went with a couch that has a chaise side. It works really well! Instead of a coffee table we did an ottoman for even more seating. We can add the ottoman to the end of the chaise or to the other side of the couch so we have like 2 chaises.
I love our sectional. We had a couch love seat and chair in our old house and they took up a lot of space and we had less seating. We currently have a sectional and chair and a half and it is perfect. We have an end table (with storage) between the chair and sectional and a coffee table with storage in the center.

We have a combo living/dining and we have a sectional that we're talking about replacing. We plan to get another bc at this point I don't think we'd survive without the chaise:)
We have a large sectional with a chaise, and a separate leather recliner. I like it. It's cozy and good for our family. However, it's not very attractive. I hope to eventually get a couch.

So a sectional would go where the current sofa is and then come around to where the pouf is?

I agree that it really depends on the space. When we first moved in to our current house, we had a couch and loveseat. I tried about 50 different arrangements because I was hesitant about a sectional, but reality is that the only arrangement that works really well and maximizes our space is to have seating in an L shape along the walls. Doing that with a couch/loveseat left what we used to call a "dead corner" that was basically weird unusable space too big for a side table, and too small for a bookshelf/larger piece of furniture.
So, we bought a Costco sectional, and I ended up loving it. It is SO MUCH BETTER for our space than the couch and loveseat combo. Plus, I love that we can all sit together and snuggle while watching a movie.
We have couches in our family room and a sectional in the basement. We LOVE watching TV/movies in the basement simply b/c we love the sectional down there. So comfy and cozy!

Exactly! We ended up ordering a sectional. It just felt like best option and hearing so many positive reviews of sectionals made me certain it's what I wanted.

Sounds like a great choice! Hope it arrives soon! Enjoy your new home.
I'm so happy seeing these responses because we ordered a sectional too that is coming tomorrow. It's for our family room which is not that big but I love the idea of DH and I on the same couch, being able to lay down to watch TV and it has two recliners -- yay!
It's leather too and I've never had a leather couch before.
