The argument I always hear is that background checks won't keep criminals from obtaining guns anyway so we shouldn't pass laws that don't do anything except make it harder for good law abiding citizens to protect themselves.  

Except it will keep criminals from getting a gun legally. That is the entire point of a background check.

That argument has never made sense to me.

Definitely in favor of the proposed policies, but given the insanity around guns I absolutely worry this could backfire.

Of course, maybe the deaths due to backfire will still be fewer than what we have now.
