I didn't really work in the retail end.. but I worked at dry cleaners for a while. So many awkward situations. People bringing in pants with ACTUAL poop in them, the manager would write a note that said something like "no fecal matter allowed" when they came back to pick up the clothes it would be so awkward explaining to them why the pants didn't get dry cleaned. People leaving drugs in their pockets, I would normally call them up and explain to them they left something in their pockets that needed to be picked up immediately lol.
I have so much respect for people that work in retail and I know December SUCKS right now, I try to be as nice as possible. This one time I was in the check out line and this lady was going off this on poor teenager for absolutely no reason, she was just treating him like complete trash and he was putting up with it. That lady needed to be kicked out the store for being such a raging bitch.
NO. And I'm going to try very hard and pretend I never read that, omg. People are disgusting.

Well clearly they weren't near a dressing room when they needed one.
but seriously, throw away your poop pants people. ew
I managed a high end boutique for 7 years and before that I managed a Nine West and worked various other places including Claire's. I have lots of stories!!
This one sticks out: We had a very strict return policy, 7 days for any return or exchanges, all tags attached and must have receipt. The policy was posted in every fitting room, at each register and we verbally told the policy and had each customer initial the receipt down by the policy at the time of checkout. Customer comes in, going on vacation and buys a ton of resort wear. Fast forward two weeks later she comes back and wants to return all of it. No tags on any of it and it reeks of chlorine and sun tan oil. I point out the return policy, her initial on the receipt and nothing has tags still on and she doesn't even have the tags. She flips and starts screaming just generally throwing a tantrum. I'm not going against policy and taking a 1200.00 hit. She finally left and the next day her husband comes in and tries to bully me into doing the refund. I already knew they had called corporate and they also told them no. Which I told him and he then started screaming about his wife costing him all this money and he still wasn't getting laid. WTF does not even come close to everything that was crossing my mind. The best part was my DM was in the fitting rooms changing lightbulbs and I could hear her laughing. She didn't think I needed any help so she just enjoyed the shitshow. People are freaking nuts!!!

Oh! I have another one! This one was Easter. The outlet mall wasn't officially open, so the public bathrooms were locked. Our store was next to the bathrooms, and a decent size space. However, our employee bathroom was in a stock area, no customers allowed. My boss was Jewish and volunteered to work that day with only one associate, and I took them a meal. Anyway, right before I got there the billionth person bitched about the bathrooms, and boss lady brightly told her the other section has bathrooms open. The woman said "I know you have one here, can't I use it?" And before boss lady could even ponder it, the woman followed up with "I really need to take a dump." Boss lady couldn't say no fast enough. Wtf.
I'm growing older but not up. My metabolic rate is pleasantly stuck, let the winds of time blow over my head. I'd rather die while I'm living than live while I'm dead.
I worked fine jewelry my last year at Macy's. I made a $19,000 sale to a woman. In talking to her I learned her profession, she was an upper level executive in a specific industry. One of my best friends is even higher in that industry and knows everyone that is anyone so when I got home I called her and asked if she knew X. She did, I told her that I'd made a big sale to her and wanted to be sure it was a legit sale. She told me oh yes, that woman can afford it - and she can. The sale ended up being 4 ruby and diamond pieces. She wanted them to go with other pieces she had so she had me show them to her, she went home to think it over. came back a few days later to buy them from me (she had me give her m schedule). She later returned all but 1 piece. I know what she did and why. She mentioned that she had no children but every other year she and her husband took her brother and his wife and 2 or 3 nieces/nephews either on a cruise or to disneyland and she paid for them with her credit card points so she didn't use her Macy's card.
So - I suspect she used the points to pay for the trip, wore the items ON the trip and then returned all but most I spent a lot of time with her on this sale and lost the commission (Fine jewelry is commission at Macy's) and it was just annoying.
There is at least one ethenic group where the woman do not come in and shop. The men come in, buy tons of clothes for the women and take them home. The women try them on and decide what to keep, the men return what they don't want. The problem is they use a huge amount of curry in their cooking. The clothing comes back reeking of that curry. They cannot be resold, they are damaged out and the store loses that money. I had people come in and dump bags FULL of clothing like that, when a bag full is dumped on a counter the smell wafts up and and literally would make me almost throw up - stomach churn, vomit starting up the throat. That was my least favorite thing and it happened a lot and not just to me.

Oh boy.
Yeah- I know how that sounds but it is the truth. It is one specific group. and several of us really did almost vomit when they would dump bags of clothes on the counter. Truth isn't always pretty. The clothes were unsalable, they had to be destroyed so it was also a monetary loss to the store.

There were a billion other shoppers that weren't doing this so it is what it is - a specific group was doing it. You can be offended as you like at what I said and try to blow this up in to something huge but what they were doing was offensive to me and other employees and cost the store money. I'm done responding to this, what happened happened.

Does your foot taste more or less offensive to you than curry?

Okay, so not just ignorant, but also a total snatch.

They were cooking. In their own homes. Does food often offend you, or only when one specific group makes it?

Here is the thing, if the tags were on and the clothes weren't stained/worn, they aren't doing anything wrong. Just because the smell of curry is unfamiliar or unpleasant to you doesn't mean it is something bad. I cannot tell you how many times I have picked up an otherwise clean item of mine that I wore and it REEKS of garlic. Like I can smell it a mile away.
This may have happened, and frequently, and maybe your store reacted the way you said it did, by having to take a loss. I GET that because like I said, the cooking odors from my (Italian) home are frequently on my clothing. And yes, I can smell the curry on some of my daughter's classmates mother's clothes when they pick their kids up. As I am sure they can smell my garlic cooking on me.
What is offensive here is that you are telling this story is a thread about people being assholes and bad customers. And putting an entire ethnic group into that category simply for doing something everyone does. Return clothing.
I don't understand it. I'd rather die than be rude to a retail worker. Or any worker who's just tying to do their damn job.
One of my favorite stories was when I worked at Walmart and this lady came to the service desk demanding that we replace her pants and underwear that she peed in because the bathroom was closed for cleaning. She was wearing them as she stood there yelling. Just pissed her pants and marched straight to the service desk without passing Go.
My retail pharmacy stories could go on for days.
Since when does that ruin pants? If threw away everything my kid peed on, I'd be penniless.
It would have been hilarious to handle her a box of detergent though.

I worked at Penney's back in the day (if you call it Penney's, you're awesome), and I recall people shitting themselves over the $4.99 clearance racks. They'd switch stickers right in front of me. It was crazy.
I was waiting for the 'one specific group' comment to explode
Can someone explain this return policy thing for department stores? I didn't know that if you process a return you get a negative commission. That is so shitty. So you just happen to be the unlucky person at the random register the customer chose to do the return, and you get dinged for it? I feel so bad for all my past returns (not many, I am lazy).
My cringe worthy retail story, I worked in fragrances at Macys in high school during the holidays. I actually really liked it, since I was more working with the customer showing them the different scents/options. Most fragrances came with a free gift usually, so most of the transactions were positive and the customers happy. One time this lady runs in (we were the first counter you hit when walking in from the mall) and yells 'You got mac?'. I was like 15, and thought she meant mac machine, like the old school ATM. lol, so I go 'Yeah there is one by the food court', she thanks me and runs out in a hurry. About 10 minutes later she comes back in all pissed and yelling about how stupid I am, she didn't mean Mac machine, she meant the makeup MAC and on and on and on. I about died, I filled up with tears from being randomly screamed at. Luckily my co-worker handled it for me and took her aside and diffused the situation. I felt so stupid, and looking back now I cringe at what a dumb teenager I must have seemed. But she was really mean!
olivesyou - When I worked retail, the return was removed off the margin of the person who sold the item - not the person who completed the return. But it could be different depending on the store itself.
But how do they know who sold it? What if you return to a different location?
I saw a woman get tackled and hauled off by undercover security in Macy's on Saturday. It brought me right back to the crazies I dealt with when I was younger and working in retail. I don't miss my old job one bit.
