What, really? In what world is that house ugly? Is this on DCNestRefugees? I don't see the thread.
No dcum, I mean the people there are buying 2 million dollar houses so I guess they know what they want? Although I think the board has a lot of people who hate everything
Ah, yeah. I tend to assume every third poster on DCUM is a troll.

How many sq ft is the current house? I didn't see it on the listing and the photos are gorgeous, but clearly taken with a lens that makes the rooms look bigger than they are. It makes the yard look huge too.

I don't love that the inside is more McMansion than the outside, but some people love it and I love the idea of keeping older neighborhoods in the same feeling as they were. Good for the neighbors and I'm guessing it will sell after winter and holidays.
Depends on the lot lines. I'm almost certain you could do a tandem garage and add space in the back. It's not ideal, but what do I know. I have a 1 car garage, and I'd estimate that less than half the properties in my town have garages, period. But I also only have one car and I only put the car in the garage if it's going to snow.
There's a house near me (circa 1900 stone Victorian mansion) that is freaking unbelievable. It's like 8 bedrooms, 4 baths, but the top floor/3 bedrooms are a separate in-law suite. And there's a carriage house. Pocket doors, fireplaces, original wordwork and light fixtures. It's listed at $750k, which is actually not bad at all. If I was in the market for a home at that price, I'd totally buy it. There are plenty of houses around here for upwards of twice that amount that are McMansion-esque monstrosities that I would never touch with a 100 foot pole, which makes this one a steal, IMO.
The house is gorgeous inside. However driving up it does not look like a $2.5 million home. That may deter buyers.
it's definitely understated. But it's also Bethesda. So...I just assume we start at 1m for a SFH there, right? Unless it's a shithole? I have such a hard time judging real estate in this area.
Also this one is just down the street. Holy crap. It has a basketball court.
I know 3 1/2 months is more than average for that market these days, but I'm LOLing that one season somehow makes this house an albatross around their suitably chastened necks.
come the fuck on. Let it sit vacant for a year and *then* you may point and laugh from your 20 ft foyer in your hideous soulless McMansion.
This! Also, it is the worst time of year to have a house on the market. It is entirely possible that the house may be overpriced, but that doesn't mean it will never be sold, just that they may need to drop the price a bit.

That is the thing...I respect they are trying to keep the charm however if you do a search at that price point of available homes this house appears from the outside to be an outlier, a very very small outlier, despite the thoughtful increase in size. I think it would appeal to a very unique buyer at that price point.

Well almost everyone on dcum is fucking crazy. I'd rather live in this house than in a McMansion any day.

Did y'all look at the other comparable houses at that price point? I don't think this is a McMansion vs charming issue. The houses that were not tearsdowns are priced in the million dollar range. That is a lot of money for Reno value you can only see from the inside. This is a lovely home, but for those that actually have $2 million would they spend it on this in comparison to the others in that price range? Not sure. It is a gamble for future resale especially if there continue to be a wave of teardowns. It is one thing to get the cute charming smaller historic home when it is cheaper, it is another to pay the exact same price as other homes where you don't have to compromise on things like a two car garage.
So basically what I am saying is that j think it costs too much lol. Cute but overpriced.

Good for them. I know people who have done this, bought a neighbors house to prevent the McMansion beside them, and renovated, I don't really get why it is news, other than the price tag. They have made money and got the house next door they wanted. I own two houses that are old for Atlanta, one 1905 and one probably 1915, both in neighborhoods were a McMansion can sell for $!M and up, even without a garage. The 1915 would be better served as a McMansion. The 1905 is a solid house, in a neighborhood of old solid houses, but a few would be better as tear downs. Not every house was built/maintained to last forever.
I live in a McMansion for my neighborhood and love it (though the definition here is more like 2800-4000 square feet, other houses mentioned are rentals we lived in previously). The house here before by all reports was a hoarding disaster, and had 16 cars, none working, on a lot that was 150' x 50'. Immediate neighbors were not sad it is gone, even the one that has been here for 50+/- years seems happy with the change, and has said as much.

Isn't everything in Bethesda/Chevy Chase $2.5 mil?
J/k sort of. My BIL is buying a crap fixer upper in that area for 850k
Bethesda is definitely expensive. I was just looking at homes in the surrounding area and the ones that weren't teardowns were not priced at that level. Still expensive just not that expensive, at least not that I saw.

I should clarify, this was online in response to this article lol.
It's gorgeous, and I don't think it's a crazy price for the area.
Are they near a metro? We have only 1 car, and that's all we need. Also, huge yard. They can add a garage
About two miles from the red line. Equidistant from bethesda and nih stations I think. Long walk. Easy bike ride. Easy kiss n ride distance. But $2M house people who don't live IN the city are not one car people.
It's a niche house for sure. But it'll sell eventually.
Seriously? This house inside looks like a million other houses. They kicked out every bit of original charm that house probably had and turned it into a builder basic home. It's like they went down a checklist of a nice subdivision of McMansions in order to make their non McMansion. Gray walls. Wood floors. White kitchen. Open floor plan. Crown molding. Etc. Especially that open kitchen floor plan. Good lord? We've been casually house hunting lately. Do you know how many of that same kitchen floor plan I've seen in new subdivision homes? I'm sure the house has so much original charm and they couldn't keep a little of it? Integrity shemegrity.

I'm glad I'm not the only one thinking this. I actually find the interior nice, but if you're trying to make an anti-McMansion, I would have thought you'd leave some original features.
